Mica in Chestnut Hill starts a new chapter as a BYOB

New chef/owner Yianni Arhontoulis bills the food as "tasty and technical." He says he is aiming at becoming a neighborhood place, signifying his intention by placing a "welcome" mat at the front door.

The name may be the same, but much has changed at the quaint, cozy Mica (8609 Germantown Ave., 267-335-3912) in Chestnut Hill as it reopens from a two-month hiatus Tuesday, Sept. 13.

First off, the new chef/owner is Yianni Arhontoulis, who was chef de cuisine at Blackfish in Conshohocken, the flagship restaurant of previous owner Chip Roman.

Second, it's BYOB.

Third, it offers an ambitious $69 tasting menu as well as a five-entree a la carte dinner menu with entrees priced in the $20s. (Opening menu is here.)

"This is a powerful moment in my career," said Arhontoulis, 28, who grew up in Hopewell, N.J., and graduated from Culinary Institute of America. Besides several years in the Roman empire, Arhontoulis' experience includes as chef at Glasbern Inn, a farm-to-table restaurant just west of Allentown in Fogelsberg, Pa.

Hours will be 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
