The Halal Guys - which started in 1990 with New York City food carts and evolved into brick-and-mortar eateries - will open a franchised location in Chinatown.

It will be part of Chinatown Square, a multi-cuisine food hall under construction at 1016 Race St., where the gift emporium Shanghai Bazaar used to be.

Halal Guys serves platters and bowls based on chicken, gyro meat, and falafel and built on rice and/or lettuce and tomato.

Halal Guys' space will take part of the front window of Chinatown Square, which will house 11 concepts - nine on the lower level and two upstairs, said Chinatown Square co-owner David Taing, whose partner is Kenny Poon (hence the corporate name Poon Taing).

If construction goes smoothly, Taing said, they anticipate a June opening.
