Bourdain: 'Best' Philly cheesesteak not from Philly?
Donkey's Place in Camden has been making them since 1943.
Anthony Bourdain's wintertime trip through New Jersey for his CNN show Parts Unknown premieres Sunday, May 31 at 9 p.m.
In this preview clip (below), Bourdain opines that the best cheesesteak in the Philadelphia area "might well come" from New Jersey.
It's from Donkey's Place in Camden, founded seven decades ago by prizefighter Leon "Donkey" Lucas. His son, Robert, serves Tony a cheesesteak with onions on a round poppy kaiser roll at the lunch spot, 1223 Haddon Ave., just off Kaighn.
Superlatives gush forth: "Fantastic." "Sublime." "Unbelievably good."
Donkey's has an offshoot - Donkey's Too in Medford.
Among other stops in the Parts Unknown Jersey episode are Hiram's in Fort Lee for fried hot dogs, Kubel's Bar in Barnegat Light for fried clam strips, Atlantic City (where his visits include the Knife & Fork, Dock's Oyster House, and Tony's Baltimore Grill), Lucille's in Warren Grove, and Tony & Ruth's in Camden.
