Woman killed on Route 55 in Glouco

Serious crashes were reported Friday morning on Route 55 in Gloucester County and on Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia, leaving a woman dead and creating major traffic jams.

The deadly Route 55 crash happened at about 5:40 a.m., when a woman driving a Kia Opirus veered off the road near Route 42 in Deptford and struck a tree.

The woman out of her car and returned to the roadway, where she was struck by another vehicle, police said.

It wasn't known why the woman, whose name was not released, drove off the road or returned to the highway after the crash.

The vehicle that struck her left the scene. No description of that vehicle or its driver was available as of late Friday morning.

The crash shut down all southbound lanes in the area for more than three hours, including the ramp from Route 42.

In Philadelphia, motorists on I-95 faced delays for hours after a tractor-trailer jackknifed. The crash caused back-ups between Cottman Avenue and Academy Road.
