Philadelphia's pride and joy Boyz II Men will be added to Fox's Grease: Live, also starring Julianne Hough and Aaron Tveit. Grease: Live airs Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
Boyz II Men will take over from another Philadelphian, Frankie Avalon. Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts grads Nate Morris, Wayne Morris and Shawn Stockman will collectively play Teen Angel, singing "Beauty School Drop Out" to Frenchie, who will be played by pop star Carly Rae Jepsen.
The group, who still has the distinction of being the best selling R&B group of all time, are currently enjoying a nice residency at the Mirage in Las Vegas that started in 2013 and will continue to 2018.
Boyz II Men won't be Grease's only local connection. Director Randal Kleiser is from Rosemont and went to Radnor. In 1998, he told Steven Rea:
"I went to Radnor High School. A lot of the stuff we put in Grease is sort of based on Radnor. I ran the low hurdle, and I put that in where Danny Zuko is running the hurdle and tripped. That happened to me - I was in a race and tripped. And the school colors, I think, are the same as Rydell's. The suburbia feel that you get from Radnor High School is sort of in Grease. The original musical was an urban musical, set in the city.''
Kleiser also takes credit for the drive-in scene, in which a rejected, dejected Danny takes to a set of swings to sing "Sandy."
