The Phillies scored 10 runs in Tuesday night’s first inning, but the rally came with a cost as Jean Segura left the game with an injured hamstring after he made the second out of the inning.

Segura, manager Gabe Kapler said, has a mild left-hamstring strain and will be evaluated before Wednesday afternoon’s series finale. Segura has started each of the team’s first 16 games and entered Tuesday with multiple hits in three of his last four games. An injury was apparent when Segura was slow to move out of the batter’s box as he grounded out.

If Segura misses time, his absence will create a chance for Scott Kingery to receive everyday playing time at shortstop. Kingery started Tuesday’s game at third base but moved to shortstop after Segura exited. Kingery hit a three-run homer in the first inning and has 11 hits in his last 17 at-bats with four doubles, a homer, and five RBIs over his last seven games.

Kapler said before the game that he was looking to find playing time for Kingery. It’s surely not ideal, but Segura’s injury could solve that dilemma.

“Absolutely," Kapler said after the 14-3 win when asked if Kingery was earning more playing time. “It’s because of the all-around game. Obviously, he’s not going to hit .500 all-season long. I can almost guarantee it. But what we can bank on is the fact that he’s probably going to have better at-bats than he did last year. He’s going to play good defense wherever we put him. He’s going to run the bases hard. He’s going to be a professional and a great teammate. So for all of those reasons, yeah, it’s getting more and more difficult to not have him in the lineup.”
