A Secret Santa has paid off about $29,000 in Christmas gifts purchased on layaway at the Kennett Square Walmart.

The anonymous donor gave the early and unexpected gift to dozens of shoppers last week, Walmart said.

“When customers quietly pay off others’ layaway items, we’re reminded how good people can be," Walmart said in a statement. "We’re honored to be a small part of these random acts of kindness.”

A Secret Santa paying for gifts held on layaway at stores has become a trend in recent years.

In 2015, Secret Santas anted up about $500,000 to cover the balances on layaway gifts at Walmarts in three states alone, including Pennsylvania.
