Angelo’s Pizza, which opened in South Philadelphia only last week to great acclaim, has been shut down indefinitely after a fire overnight in the floor beneath its main oven, said owner Danny DiGiampietro.

The shutdown, ordered by the city Department of Licenses and Inspections, will be a blow to the pizza cognoscenti that packed Angelo’s, which occupies the former Sarcone’s Deli at 936 S. Ninth St. Drawn by word of mouth and a solid Instagram base, Angelo’s had been packed daily with customers seeking DiGiampietro’s pizzas and sandwiches.

DiGiampietro said he got a call from his alarm company before 1 a.m. Firefighters had to cut a piece of a floor joist to get to the flames. The structure was then deemed unsafe. DiGiampietro said it was too early too tell how long repairs would take.

Opening the shop has been an 18-month ordeal for DiGiampietro, who founded Angelo’s in Haddonfield in 2015. He closed that shop last year.

DiGiampietro said the South Philadelphia storefront had to be gutted to accommodate new electrical wiring and gas lines.

“And now this,” he said. “We’ll get through it.”
