People say the Franklintown neighborhood is changing, but that's not true.
It's being transformed.
An area that's become chock-a-block with quality housing, good restaurants, stores, and attractions is going to get more, and soon, encouraged by the opening of the Barnes Foundation and its own surging momentum.

Ocean City NJ bridge is a massive marvel of concrete

Along with the usual water ice, greasy pizza, and tubes of sunscreen, the unofficial first weekend of summer was marked by a new arrival this year at the Jersey Shore: 175,000 cubic yards of concrete. It didn’t arrive all at once, of course, but the concrete — the Route 52 causeway bridge — is now a finished product and represents a major feat of engineering. The bridge stretches more than two miles from Somers Point on the mainland to the barrier island of Ocean City, able to accommodate 40,000 cars a day.

ATLANTIC CITY — James Rahn swings the Honda Accord to the side of North Maine Avenue so he can sniff the ocean air."It’s nice, right?" he says, a gravel-voiced question, technically, but not one that awaits an answer. His stories are big on smell. His book Bloodnight, a collection of semifictionalized memories of growing up tough in this forlorn city, begins with a fifth-grade trauma.

To create the set for the Broadway smash Newsies, Pottstown resident Tobin Ost served multiple masters: a choreographer who needed space for his performers to dance, a director who envisioned a jungle-gym effect, a writer who moved the action from scene to scene, and producers who worried about the box office. So the scenic designer crafted a tiered, tic-tac-toe metalscape that separates, recedes and rotates. Performers dance up, down, and through it during a musical set in turn-of-the-century New York. For his efforts, Ost has been nominated for a Tony Award.

The best way for a patient to understand what happens in a heart attack is not to have one at all, but to have the doctor simulate it on a computer. That is the idea behind new research at the University of Pennsylvania, in which scientists created computer models of the blood of three volunteers and correctly predicted their response to various anticlotting medications. In one case, they were able to determine that a donor’s blood would have no response to aspirin, and indeed that person turned out to have a previously unknown genetic mutation that caused exactly that problem.

A forecast for above-90 temperatures and high humidity prompted the City of Philadelphia to issue an excessive heat warning for Monday and Tuesday and to institute home visits to the elderly and other precautions aimed at preventing illness and death."We strongly urge the public to visit older friends, relatives, and neighbors to ensure that air-conditioners or fans are working, and homes are adequately ventilated. In a heat wave, the majority of the victims are older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions," Philadelphia Health Commissioner Donald Schwarz said. The National Weather Service said the temperature would be in the 90s Monday and Tuesday, but was expected to drop into the 80s Wednesday and the high 70s Thursday and Friday. The normal high for this time of year is 77.

Sitting at a table in the shade of sycamore trees outside the new Barnes museum, Isabella Royal, 5, was a tiny picture of concentration Saturday morning.Henri Matisse’s The Red Madras Headdress was on display inside, but Isabella was peering at a small laminated reproduction and using colored pencils to create her own impression of Matisse’s iconic image of a seated woman in a patterned headdress. Her parents, Kenya and Peter, watched, rapt. "Normally she’s coloring in a coloring book or just using a little notepad and scribbling," Kenya said as her daughter tried to decide between using gold or orange to draw the woman’s chair.
