Ocean City NJ bridge is a massive marvel of concrete

Along with the usual water ice, greasy pizza, and tubes of sunscreen, the unofficial first weekend of summer was marked by a new arrival this year at the Jersey Shore: 175,000 cubic yards of concrete. It didn’t arrive all at once, of course, but the concrete — the Route 52 causeway bridge — is now a finished product and represents a major feat of engineering. The bridge stretches more than two miles from Somers Point on the mainland to the barrier island of Ocean City, able to accommodate 40,000 cars a day.

When I told a colleague I was heading off to the spanking new, high-style Revel resort and casino in Atlantic City to check out the stayover experience, she looked at me with skeptical disdain."For $400 a night," she shot back, "I pretty much expect to have my feet kissed."

"Active, intelligent, and articulate" are words that come to mind when describing Nasir. The 14-year-old has a charming smile that draws people to him. He likes to learn new things and to keep busy. He is involved in a variety of activities including playing basketball and football. He also enjoys testing his skill at video games, and likes to watch action and comedy movies and spend time with his friends.Enrolled in the seventh grade, he attends regular education classes and earns high grades. He gets along well with his teachers and classmates. Nasir is already thinking about his future. He would love to be president when he grows up. He also would like to have the "biggest car." But for now, finding a forever family is his top priority. He wants a family that is "fun, fair, and firm." Nasir has much potential but he cannot achieve it alone. He needs a patient, committed family that will provide a structured environment for him and will guide him in the years ahead. He is close to his siblings and grandmother and the contact should be maintained.

To create the set for the Broadway smash Newsies, Pottstown resident Tobin Ost served multiple masters: a choreographer who needed space for his performers to dance, a director who envisioned a jungle-gym effect, a writer who moved the action from scene to scene, and producers who worried about the box office. So the scenic designer crafted a tiered, tic-tac-toe metalscape that separates, recedes and rotates. Performers dance up, down, and through it during a musical set in turn-of-the-century New York. For his efforts, Ost has been nominated for a Tony Award.

The best way for a patient to understand what happens in a heart attack is not to have one at all, but to have the doctor simulate it on a computer. That is the idea behind new research at the University of Pennsylvania, in which scientists created computer models of the blood of three volunteers and correctly predicted their response to various anticlotting medications. In one case, they were able to determine that a donor’s blood would have no response to aspirin, and indeed that person turned out to have a previously unknown genetic mutation that caused exactly that problem.

Toward the end of the second night of Beyoncé’s four-show Memorial Day weekend stand at the Revel casino and resort in Atlantic City on Saturday, the singer and her 11-member all-female band turned their attention to a feminist club-banger called "Run the World (Girls)."With First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia seated in a box to her left at Revel’s 5,050-person capacity Ovation Hall, the pop and R&B world’s ruling Queen Bee declared herself — and her Sisters — "Smart enough to make these millions, strong enough to bear the children / And get back to business." For Beyoncé, these shows, taking place at the new $2.4 billion resort whose success is thought to be so crucial to Atlantic City’s economic future, were an opportunity to do just that. The 30-year-old singer did not tour behind her 2011 album 4, and these are her first performances — she’s due back on stage Sunday and Monday nights — since giving birth in January to Blue Ivy Carter, her daughter with husband Jay-Z, the other half of the foremost power couple in pop music.

Cable’s History is pulling out all the stops for this lapidary retelling of one of our country’s most renowned internecine struggles.Hatfields & McCoys gets a fulsome miniseries treatment (showing over three consecutive nights, beginning Memorial Day), star power (Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton play the antagonistic patriarchs), and an unprecedented promotional campaign (on TV, at cineplexes, even at the Floyd Mayweather–Miguel Cotto fight earlier this month). All this for some violent hillbillies who simply could not get along. Because down in their neck of the Appalachians, there really wasn’t much to squabble over except pride. The challenge for History is to give this nasty family feud an epic spin. The result plays out like The Godfather with squirrel rifles.
