Only woman to win Fields Medal Maryam Mirzakhani dies at 40
Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to ever win the Fields Medal, the most prestigious awards in mathematics, died on Saturday. The Iranian-born mathematician, 40, had breast cancer which spread to her bones. The Fields Medal was first established in 1936, and Mirzakhani won the award in 2014 for complex geometry and dynamical systems. Mirzakhani was not only the first woman to receive the award, but also the only Iranian.
