First grade school beatings


At first, says Gbahtuo Comgbaye, a West African immigrant, he wasn’t terribly concerned when his 6-year-old son started coming home from school with bruises on his chest and neck. But that changed one morning in September, when his child, Menduawar, tearily asked him: “If my friends beat me up, and hurt me, and wanted to kill me, would you do something about it?”
