I am so disappointed in those commuters on the subway that stood by and watched like a knot on a log. Were they mentally unstable people themselves??? What on earth were they thinking??? Did they think they were watching a movie? What??? Please dear God, don't let me get into a situation where I will have to ride that subway!!!

It saddens me, that no one helped out in this situation. And more so that this child is being raised with that monster as a "father" figure, what will he think is right and wrong when he grows up. Its a bad situation all around.

My first thought is the same: who are these 20 people on the car who DIDN'T intervene? Though I'm female and under 5'3", I'm thinking I would have leapt on the guy's back and clawed his eyes. But the reality is: people scattered in fear. Remember the guy who chopped up his seatmate with a hunting knife on a Greyhound bus? Same deal, everyone ran away screaming. Except there, the victim died. That fear is an absolute natural gut-level response. Decide NOW that if you are in such a situation you will act counter to every survival impulse and move in to assist.

To all those people who think they would have been a hero and intervened, remember this guy was wildly swinging a hammer. If you decided to jump into the fray and took one good shot from that hammer, you may be maimed or killed. Also, since it happened so fast, no one had time to determine the relationship between the attacker and the victim. Would it be worth intervening and risking your life over what could have been a fight over a drug deal or a hootchie ghetto baby mama? That probably wasn't the case here, but in a split second, no one could make that determination, so it makes more sense to just get out of the way. Quite honestly, if a victim is not a person of color and the attacker is black or hispanic, I would be more inclined to intervene. If I had witnessed the Sean Conroy beating, I would have most certainly intervened.

I love all the false bravado..let's get real. It's easy to be 10 feet tall and bullettproof while sitting at your computer. Unless the attacker is a male and the victim female the majority of people are going to just ignore the situation, that's just how it is. I'm not going to badmouth the passangers, people may not want to believe it but it's a natural reaction to violence and the unknown. Some people would of intervene no doubt but it's special trait that not many have. Keep the blame on who deserves it, the cowardly animals that roam this city.

Best advice. Avoid the subway or better yet; avoid Philly altogether.

The penalty for "cussing up a storm" is not being assaulted with a hammer. That was absurd. Hopefully, if you were inclined to sit, and/or retreat from ONE(1) fool with a hammer, perhaps watching this video a few times and trying really hard to picture yourself in the shoes of someone clearly (at that moment) sitting in, not lying across several chairs, minding his business, undoubtedly listening to tunes, being rushed by someone twice his size, will help you become more determined to intervene when intervention is called for and the right thing to do. Society needs more people who aren't paralyzed by fear. If you don't practice, you won't perform. Make a habit out of not sitting silently and it will become second nature.

Philly needs a 3 strikes and your out Law! Period end of statement. This guy had a "lengthy criminal record" He should have been behind bars. Then this would not have happened. Don't Blame the innocent bystanders for not taking action. Put the Blame where it belongs. Starting with the Governor, the mayor, and on down the line. This is outrageous. I am so glad I moved from Philly. It makes me sick to see something like this happen.

Sue the judges that have failed to keep this man locked up, they have done an injustice to the public that they are supposed to be serving. Oh yeah, you can't do that, so I guess this will just keep happening.
