The Philadelphia Wings have made ESPN's SportsCenter, or at least their jerseys did. Philly's NLL team sported jerseys during their Sunday win against the Buffalo Bandits with their Twitter handles on the back, marking the first time an American pro sports team done so.
And while SportsCenter's commentators barely discussed the Wings' (3-2) 14-13 victory against the Bandits (2-3), Wings player Max Seibald said that any publicity that puts the game in front of a large audience is a step in the right direction for the league.
"Whatever sheds light on the sport, the team and the game in a positive light is always a good thing," said Seibald, who leads the team in Twitter followers with more than 3500. "The more coverage out sport gets the better."
And the team can expect more coverage. In November, NLL officials announced a two year licensing broadcasting deal with CBSSports, providing more exposure for the league. Wings captain Brodie Merrill said the league has slowly been growing to appeal to a larger audience, whether it's through Twitter jerseys to get on SportsCenter or television licensing agreements.
"Anytime lacrosse can be recognized on that kind of stage it's a good thing," Merrill said. "At first we were a little bit skeptical with how it was going to play out but we brought awareness to the game and to a great cause."
The team auctioned the jerseys after the game and raised $1300.
