Late rally not enough for Wings

The Wings did not allow a goal in the second half, but still lost to the Colorado Mammoth, 10-9, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.

The Wings finished their road trip 0-3 and have lost four in a row overall.

If the Wings had won both of their games this weekend, they could have clinched a playoff berth. Now, because of the division crossover rule, they could potentially be left out.

In the NLL, if the fifth place team in the West has a better record than the fourth place team in the East, they could crossover to the East and qualify for the playoffs.

With their victory the Mammoth (5-8) of the West Division tied the Buffalo Bandits for the proverbial fourth spot in the East Division.

The Wings (5-7) are only a half game ahead of that spot.

The Rochester Knighthawks also passed the Wings in the East Division standings as they defeated the East Division-leading Toronto Rock.

As for Saturday night, the Mammoth used a fast start to take a 10-4 lead heading into halftime. Colorado scored seven goals in the second quarter with Adam Jones scoring late in the quarter, which turned out to be the Mammoth’s final goal of the game.

The Wings scored three goals in the third quarter to close the gap to 10-7.

Kevin Buchanan pulled the Wings’ deficit to two after a goal that was assisted by Kevin Ross and Mike McLellan.

Drew Westervelt cut the deficit to one after a goal with 57.3 seconds remaining in regulation.

Despite the Wings’ furious rally, the hill proved to be too steep for them to climb.

The Wings will receive a week of rest before traveling to Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y. to take on the Knighthawks for sole possession of second place in the East Division.
