Outlaws lose QB to hand injury heading into game with Soul

After J.J. Raterink goes down with broken pinkie, Soul prepping for backup Sean Brackett.

A REAL GOOD setup for the Soul just got a little bit better. Fresh off a 44-point steamrolling of Tampa Bay, the Soul (8-1) is playing the reeling Las Vegas Outlaws in the first-ever AFL game at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Outlaws will be without starting quarterback J.J. Raterink, who has a broken pinkie on his right (throwing) hand. Sean Brackett, a rookie out of Columbia, will get the start.

"That's certainly an advantage," said Soul owner and former NFL quarterback Ron Jaworski. "Any league you look at - the NFL, the CFL, Arena - if the starting quarterback goes down, there is a dropoff. They're not going to be as good without , but we're not going to fall asleep , either."

Brackett passed for four touchdowns and ran for another in relief duty as Las Vegas lost to visiting Spokane last week. He was 0-3 collegiately against Penn.

The Outlaws (3-5) have lost three in a row. One of their wins this season, however, is against league power Arizona.

"They have a good team even though their record might not show it," Soul linebacker Joe Goosby said. "They're pros, too."

Ticket update

Soul vice president and chief operating officer John Adams said about 5,000 tickets have been sold for Saturday, roughly half the capacity of Boardwalk Hall.

"There's a ton of positive energy down there," Adams said. "Whenever we go around with our Soul shirts on, people come up to us and talk about the game."
