Philadelphia's got a whole lot of Soul

This season has been, by far, the Philadelphia Soul's best. It has brought great moments and memories along with the well-deserved publicity for a team that this week is practicing for Arena Bowl XXII in New Orleans.

The Soul, who will play San Jose for the Arena Football League title on Sunday night, began the season with the idea that it will reach this spot.

"From Day 1, we knew on paper that we were a championship-caliber team," Soul wideout Chris Jackson said. "And as the season started to unfold, we realized that we had the talent not just on paper, but that we were the best team in Arena Football."

Granted, the Soul has not been as well-publicized as the NFL Eagles, but team members and management feel like they are getting their name out there. Head coach Brett Munsey said he feels that his team this year has drawn the most media attention it has ever received, and says that has given a positive boost to the organization.

It is clear to the organization that if the Soul wins the Arena Bowl, the media hype would be considerable. The last parade for a Philadelphia sports team was in June 1983, after the Sixers won the NBA title. And another could be forming at City Hall next week. *

Politicians are supposed to watch what they say. But at yesterday's Nat'l Governors Conference, Ed Rendell made some blunt, maybe even sexist, remarks about Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano that were picked up by a nearby microphone.
