Union lose in U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Union scored late in their U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match against the New England Revolution to tie the score, but lost, 4-2, in a shootout Wednesday night.

Fabian Herbers, with an assist from Sebastien Le Toux, beat Revolution goalie Brad Knighton in the 90th minute for a 1-1 deadlock, forcing 30 minutes of extra time. Neither team scored, and the match was decided in a shootout. Knighton stopped two of the four Union shots he faced, but Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake stopped only one of five.

Lee Nguyen, Chris Tierney, and Jose Goncalves also found the net in the shootout for the Revolution, while Ilsinho and Herbers scored for the Union.

New England opened the scoring in regulation when Je-Vaughn Watson, off an assist from Diego Fagundez, beat Blake in the 44th minute.

The Union were outshot, 18-11, in the match.The Union were eliminated from the Cup, while the Revolution advanced to the semifinals. The match between the two MLS members was played at Jordan Field at Harvard University.

The Union will return to Major League Soccer action Saturday night against the Impact in Montreal. The Union (8-6-6) are in second place in the Eastern Conference. Montreal (6-5-8) is in fourth.

In other U.S. Open Cup matches Wednesday, the Houston Dynamo beat FC Dallas, 1-0, and the Chicago Fire beat the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, 3-0.
