Official: Jermain Defoe to join Toronto FC

Striker Jermain Defoe will join Toronto from Tottenham Hotspur on February 28, in a deal rumored to be worth over £8 million.

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed a deal with MLS side Toronto FC for striker Jermain Defoe to join the side, effective February 28. Defoe will be revealed as one of Toronto's designated players in a press conference on Monday.

The 31 year old moved from West Ham United to join Spurs in 2004, although he left for a season to play with Portsmouth. He returned to White Hart Lane in January 2009 and has made 185 appearances for the club since then, scoring 78 goals. Although Defoe received regular playing time at Spurs last season, he has not managed to secure a spot as a regular starter for the club since the season of his return.

And so to Toronto goes Defoe, seeking more playing time ahead of the World Cup this summer (and likely a decent chunk of change, as well). And, with Toronto trying to turn themselves around after finishing second from bottom in the Eastern Conference last season, it's quite likely Defoe will get all the time he needs.
