This came to me a bit out of the blue, but now that it's been put on the record, I think it ought to be discussed.

It's been reported that Fox, rights-holder to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, has been pushing FIFA to apply pressure on Major League Soccer to change to a winter-centric calendar.

Fox televised MLS games for many years on Fox Soccer Channel, and Fox Sports World before that. Their affiliation ran from 2003 through 2011. After last season, NBC was awarded the broadcast deal that Fox had previously owned.

Last October, Fox beat ESPN to the rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Included in their deal was the rights to a number of other FIFA tournaments, starting with the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada.

That Fox and FIFA have been advocating a winter schedule for MLS is not news. Fox analyst Eric Wynalda and FIFA president Sepp Blatter have both publicly made the point in the past.

That the two entities have been directly working together - and with Fox pushing FIFA in particular - is news.

It would have been one thing - and probably less of a surprise - if FIFA was pushing Fox. That Fox is pushing FIFA to influence a domestic league on its behalf is more significant, I would argue.

(Out of due diligence, I asked a spokesperson at MLS headquarters for a comment. That person politely declined.)

The backstory to what I've learned is as follows:

If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I am a contributor to a French-language soccer podcast based out of Montréal called SoccerPlus. It's hosted by Philippe Germain, the Montréal-based Canadian correspondent for World Soccer magazine. He used to be play-by-play voice of soccer on Radio-Canada, the French-language arm of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

(Yes, I'm fluent in French. And yes, that's one of the many reasons why I'm excited Montréal has joined Major League Soccer.)

MLS commissioner Don Garber was in Montréal yesterday to speak to the region's Board of Trade. A few hours after that event, Philippe and I sat down for our weekly conversation. One of the subjects that came up while Garber was on his trip was the potential for MLS to move to a winter-centric schedule at some point.

Now, I'm generally happy to tell anyone why I think it's dumb for MLS to blow off almost the entire summer in order to get the Final out of the way of the annual Eagles-Giants prime time game.

(Yes, I know it's just a coincidence... right?)

But I became particularly interested in discussing the subject yesterday when Philippe told me the following [in French]:

J'ai parlé avec des gens de Fox Television quand j'étais à la Coupe MLS à Los Angeles. Je sais qu'il y a de la pression qui est mis par Fox auprés de la FIFA - puisque Fox a signé le contrat pour la diffusion de la Coupe du Monde aux États-Unis - il y a de la pression mis par Fox au FIFA pour que la MLS adopte ce calendrier.

Which, translated, means:

I talked with some people at Fox Television when I was at the MLS Cup in Los Angeles [last November]. I know there was pressure put by Fox on FIFA - because Fox signed a contract to broadcast the World Cup in the United States - there was pressure put by Fox on FIFA to to get MLS to adopt that [winter-centric] calendar.

You can listen to the show here. I come on at the 41:14 mark, and we start talking about the calendar change at the 44:20 mark or so.

What do you make of all this? Do you think MLS should move to a winter-centric schedule? Fire away in the comments.

Fox must need programing to replace either the Saturday morning cartoons or the middle of the night infomericals.

But Why? Fox soccer and soccer plus have all of the programming that they need during the winter with all of the Euro leagues. As far as dividing viewers, MLS either shuts down during WC or the intl. ratings blow away the domestic ratings. I think it is plausible, but from a financial/ratings point it doesn't seem to make sense. I can see Fifa pushing it as it would make sense from the intl. calendar/ transfer market sense but I don't see what Fox gains from this....

I agree with dangeroo. I don't see the gain for Fox to push FIFA. Playing a winter schedule in MLS (just weather wise) will pretty much be impossible. Vancouver, Montreal in December and February? I guess MLS will eventually bow to the pressure by FIFA (and Fox too I guess) switch but I can't see it happening for years.

I would very likely give up my season tickets if the league switched to a winter schedule. I have no desire to sit in PPL Park - as nice as it is - in December, January, and February. Frankly, the weather in March, October, and (hopefully!) November is bad enough...

French for league is "la ligue" therefore the acronym MLS gets the feminine determinant.

keep up the great work, JT. I don't know how I feel about you speaking french. Do you know why there are so many trees in Paris? So the germans could march in shade.

I love the Union and have enjoyed the MLS over the past few years. One of the main reasons is it's in the summer. It's the only soccer in the summer besides international friendlies that are lame and show no real competition. I agree with Zherog. I would probably give up my season tix to the Union if they switched to Winter. I can't fit in Soccer, football, Hockey, Basketball all in one season. And I definitely don't want to sit in PPL park in Dec through Feb.

I can't believe anybody actually watches this stuff. Where I grew up, soccer was for wimps that could not cut it playing football.

Brilliant Miles I've played both and while American Football is more physical would love to see your slow aazz on the ball getting studs up crumpled by a guy like Oguchi Onyewu 6'4' 220 lb defender.....yea the whole world watches this game I guess there's a reason why it popular. I don't much like golf (talk about manly game) but I don't waste my time posting on golf threads.....Back to post keep MLS in summer only competes with baseball and Fox is stupid if they think they'll draw more viewers lining it up against EPL, NFL, Hockey and College bball in the winter...

Well that's funny mileslong, where I grew up football players were the fat dudes who couldn't run, jump, or anything else. The soccer players were ten times better athletes than the football players....you really have no clue what your talking about. My guess is that you got beat up by soccer players growing up or even better yet, a soccer player took your girlfriend and then you got beat up!

    GREAT piece, JT!!

Y'know(Without saying too much about myself or my profession), There can be 2 dozen reasons NOT to do something. But if MONEY is one reason that it should be done....then it will be done.

But the problem with this scenario is; I don't see how more money would be made with the proposed change of schedule to the MLS. It's just not immediately obvious.
