Olympic gold medalist Carli Lloyd knows what it takes to be a winner.

Yesterday, the 27-year-old Delran, N.J., native joined one when she agreed to terms with 2009 Women's Professional Soccer league champion Sky Blue FC, pending league approval. Lloyd played for the WPS' Chicago Red Stars last season.

The move serves as a homecoming for Lloyd as Sky Blue - a New York-based team - plays its home games on Yurcak Field, the home of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Lloyd was an All-America at Rutgers.

"Well, the bonus is that I am coming to a team that already has accomplished so much," Lloyd said via conference call. "There are so many familiar faces that I know, and there is a big Jersey connection, which I love. I know we will be able to gel well."

Lloyd will be close to longtime trainer and friend James Galanis, who was instrumental in helping her prepare for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, where her game-winning goal in the final against Brazil allowed the U.S. to capture Olympic gold.

"He's my go-to person, he's been with me since 2003, he's the person that has stuck by me through it all," said Lloyd. "It's great to be back and getting up-close training from him. I'm excited."

When asked if she considered playing for the Philadephia Independence - which debuts next season - Lloyd said being close to home would have been nice with either team, but felt Sky Blue was the better fit.

"Well, sure, you weigh the pros and cons of each situation, but I'm looking for a team I can grow with. I feel confident I can do that here . . . I am excited for the future and I know I made the right decision for sure."

WPS' second season begins in March and runs through August.
