Union squander three-goal lead in draw with Montreal

Their winless streak reached 14 games, 0-10-4.

Although the Union snapped a four-game losing streak, their 3-3 draw Saturday with the visiting Montreal Impact continued a series of disappointing results.

That's because the Union squandered a 3-0 lead in falling to 0-4-3 and remaining the only Major League Soccer team without a win. In addition, their winless streak, dating back to last year, is at 14 games (0-10-4).

"To be up 3-0 at home, it feels like a loss," Union midfielder Alejandro Bedoya said. "It's hard to stomach."

Before a crowd of 15,107 at Talon Energy Stadium, the Union started quickly on Roland Alberg's goal in the fifth minute. It was only the third time this year the Union have enjoyed a lead.

C.J. Sapong stole the ball and fed Alberg, who turned defender Laurent Ciman around and shot the ball by sliding keeper Evan Bush.

Sapong made it 2-0 by scoring his fourth goal of the season in the 23rd minute. Haris Medunjanin sent a pass to the far post that was headed by Chris Pontus in front of the goal, and Sapong finished with a header into an open net.

Alberg made it 3-0 on a penalty kick in the 39th minute. Rookie Jack Elliott drew the penalty kick after being taken down in the box by Dominic Oduro.

Montreal (1-2-4) made it 3-1 on Ignacio Piatti's goal in the 41st minute, his third of the season.

The Impact got two second-half goals from Anthony Jackson-Hamel, his first in the 69th minute on a header. The Union could have put the game away, but Bush stopped Fafa Picault with a sliding save on a breakaway in the 81st minute.

Jackson-Hamel then scored the equalizer in the 87th minute.

Union keeper Andre Blake wasn't able to secure a shot from outside the box by Matteo Mancuso, and Jackson-Hamel tapped in the rebound.

"I think it was a fantastic comeback," Montreal coach Mauro Biello said. "I don't think you see comebacks like that on the road too often."

The Union will resume action Saturday when they visit the Los Angeles Galaxy.
