Richie Marquez's status is uncertain for Union this week

The defender suffered a concussion in a loss Saturday

Union defender Richie Marquez, who suffered a concussion Saturday in a 2-1 loss at D.C. United, is likely to be cleared to play this week. But whether he sees action in the home game against the Portland Timbers was unclear, coach Jim Curtin said.

Marquez suffered the injury during the first half, played until halftime, and gave way to rookie Jack Elliott, who played in his first Major League Soccer match.

"Richie is going through protocol. It looks like he will be cleared in time for the game, and we have to make the decision knowing Richie hasn't had a full week of training," Curtin said Wednesday. "We're confident in Jack to play. He has the size, the feel, the passing ability to play in the league, and he showed that against D.C. United."

Elliott went in with the Union trailing, 2-0, at halftime.

Curtin said backup goalie John McCarthy also remained out with a concussion.

The Union (0-2-2) have three straight home games beginning with the matchup against the Timbers (3-1-1).

Sarvas suspended

MLS suspended D.C. United's Marcelo Sarvas for one game and issued an undisclosed fine for a serious foul play that endangered the safety of an opponent in the 65th minute against the Union. Sarvas ended up stomping on Union midfielder Derrick Jones while he was on the ground.

Curtin said that Sarvas should have received a red card.
