An in-depth look at the Union's 2015 roster

Here's a position-by-position breakdown on all of the Union's players.

Here's a position-by-position breakdown on all of the Union's players.

Andre Blake

Age: 24
Born: May Pen, Jamaica
Years as a pro: 1 (in MLS)

The No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft is second on the depth chart, but his time is coming with both the Union and Jamaica's national team.

Raïs Mbolhi

Age: 28
Born: Paris, France
Years as a pro: 11 (1 in MLS)

After last season's controversial arrival - and the late-season gaffe that helped cost the Union a playoff berth - he's now the Union's unquestioned No. 1 in net.

John McCarthy

Age: 22
Born: Philadelphia
Years as a pro: 1 (in USL)

The North Catholic and La Salle product is third on the depth chart - and that's a good thing. For once, the Union have clarity in how their goalkeepers stack up.

Age: 29
Born: Ariquemes, Brazil
Years as a pro: 10 (2 in MLS)

As the team's only left-footed left back, he's got value that no other player has. But his lack of consistency makes him a risk for regular playing time.

Raymond Lee

Age: 22
Born: Kansas City, Mo.
Years as a pro: 0

He played in college as a midfielder, and manager Jim Curtin hopes to convert him to an outside back.

Richard Marquez

Age: 23
Born: Pomona, Calif.
Years as a pro: 1 (in USL)

Led the USL in minutes played as Harrisburg reached the championship game. Could see time with the Union this season as a backup.

Ray Gaddis

Age: 25
Born: Indianapolis
Years as a pro: 3 (all in MLS)

Firmly entrenched as the starting left back, he can shut down MLS's biggest stars one-on-one.

Steven Vítoria

Age: 28
Born: Toronto
Years as a pro: 9 (none in MLS)

One of the team's big offseason signings - literally. He's 6-foot-5, and is back in North America after a decade of living and playing in Portugal. A surefire starter and natural marshal of the defense.

Age: 24
Born: Kensington, Md.
Years as a pro: 4 (all in MLS)

Solid and dependable, he's likely to start alongside Vítoria on the back line.

Sheanon Williams

Age: 24
Born: Boston
Years as a pro: 5 (all in MLS and USL)

He's had a lock on the starting right back job for so long that it's hard to believe he's still so young. His ranging runs up the flank are a key weapon for the Union's transition game.

Age: 18
Born: Yaoundé, Cameroon
Years as a pro: 0

The 5-foot-7 winger made the team the hard way, coming to MLS from a semi-pro club in Thailand for a preseason trial.

Eric Bird

Age: 22
Born: Virginia Beach, Va.
Years as a pro: 0

He led Virginia to last season's national championship, and led himself to a relationship with U.S. women's national team rising star Morgan Brian.

Brian Carroll

Age: 33
Born: Springfield, Va.
Years as a pro: 14 (all in MLS)

The defensive midfielder is one of MLS's most loyal servants and a respected leader in the locker room. But his speed has worn down with age.

Danny Cruz

Age: 25
Born: Petersburg, Va.
Years as a pro: 6 (all in MLS)

His speed, strength and cunning have long tormented defenders across MLS.

Maurice Edu

Age: 28
Born: Fontana, Calif.
Years as a pro: 8 (3 in MLS)

Despite having to adjust to playing central defense, he flourished in his return to MLS after six years in Europe. This year he's likely to play in his preferred role as a defensive midfielder.

Fred

Age: 35
Born: Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Years as a pro: 18 (5 in MLS)

Nicknamed "Grandpa," he'll be a player-coach.

Cristian Maidana

Age: 28
Born: Resistencia, Argentina
Years as a pro: 9 (1 in MLS)

He holds the defining jersey on any soccer team: the playmaker's No. 10. His vision and passing set the tone for everyone around him.

Sébastien Le Toux

Age: 31
Born: Mont-Saint-Aignan, France
Years as a pro: 11 (8 in MLS)

A fan favorite since scoring a hat trick in the Union's first ever home game, he's the Union's all-time leader in goals and assists.

Michael Lahoud

Age: 28
Born: Freetown, Sierra Leone
Years as a pro: 6 (all in MLS)

Versatility is his biggest asset. His best role is defensive midfielder, but he can also fill in at outside back position if necessary.

Jimmy McLaughlin

Age: 21
Born: Bryn Mawr, Pa.
Years as a pro: 3

Since becoming the Union's second-ever homegrown player in 2012, he's spent more time at their minor league affiliate in Harrisburg than PPL Park. But that could change this year if his finishing skills continue to improve. He already has pro-level speed.

Vincent Nogueira

Age: 27
Born: Besançon, France
Years as a pro: 8 (1 in MLS)

A do-it-all dynamo who covers acres of ground every game, he became an unexpected cult hero among Union fans in his debut season with the team.

Zach Pfeffer

Age: 20
Born: Dresher, Pa.
Years as a pro: 4 (all in MLS)

He has shouldered huge expectations from the day he became a pro, and got his picture splashed on newspaper sports pages across the region. He'll have a key role with the U.S. under-20 national team at the World Cup in late spring.

Andrew Wenger

Age: 24
Born: Lancaster, Pa.
Years as a pro: 3 (all in MLS)

The No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft played for five different coaches in Montreal and Philadelphia before Jim Curtin unlocked his true talent. A striker-turned-central defender-and-striker-again, Wenger has flourished as a left wing midfielder.

Fernando Aristeguieta

Age: 22
Born: Caracas, Venezuela
Years as a pro: 5 (0 in MLS)

The marquee offseason signing, expected to be the true finisher the Union have craved. At 6-foot-2, he can power in headers as well as he can poach with his feet.

Conor Casey

Age: 33
Born: Dover, N.H.
Years as a pro: 15 (8 in MLS)

As powerful a striker as MLS and the U.S. national team has ever had, but his aging knees got the better of him last season.

Dzenan Catic

Age: 23
Born: Jablanica, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Years as a pro: 0

The 6-foot-3 second-round draft pick lost his NCAA eligibility after signing a youth contract with German club Kaiserslautern. So he played for a NAIA school, scoring bags of goals there and in summer amateur leagues. Could be a steal for the Union.

Antoine Hoppenot

Age: 24
Born: Paris, France
Years as a pro: 3 (all in MLS and USL)

Exploded as a rookie out of Princeton, but he has tailed off since, and didn't score at all last year.

C.J. Sapong

Age: 26
Born: Manassas, Va.
Years as a pro: 4 (all in MLS and USL)

He scored five goals as a rookie and nine in 2012, but the well has gone dry since. He and the Union hope a move from Sporting Kansas City to Philadelphia will help revitalize his career.
