HOUSTON - Union forward Jack McInerney wasn't as happy as you might expect after setting a team scoring record over the weekend.

"I would rather have won [the game]," McInerney said after the Houston Dynamo defeated the Union, 3-1, Saturday to clinch the final playoff spot in the MLS' Eastern Conference. "It [stinks] to lose and we just played a really sloppy game."

The 20-year-old McInerney scored in the game's 19th minute by heading a cross from Sheanon Williams for his fourth goal in as many games. The previous record was shared by Sebastien Le Toux and Danny Mwanga.

McInerney's goal tied the game at 1-all. In the fifth minute, Houston forward Macoumba Kandji had beaten a pair of defenders and slipped the ball past keeper Zac MacMath to give the Dynamo a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Dynamo got a goal from Oscar Boniek Garcia in the 71st minute to go up, 2-1.

That was followed by a successful penalty kick by Brad David in the 75th minute, after the Union's Carlos Valdes was called for a slide tackle in the box.

The loss dropped the Union to 10-16-6 (36 points) while Houston improved to 14-8-11 (53).

"I am pretty disappointed in the way we played," Union manager John Hackworth said. "Our team did not perform at the level we are capable of in almost every facet. With that said, you have to give Houston credit they make it incredibly hard to play here."

The Union will visit Sporting Kansas City (17-7-9) on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m., and return home to host the New York Red Bulls (15-9-9) in their season finale at PPL Park on Saturday afternoon at 1:30.

The Union is 1-1 against Sporting Kansas City this season, but has lost both games to the Red Bulls.
