U.S. tops Barbados, 1-0, advances in World Cup qualifying

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -The United States advanced to the CONCACAF regional semifinals of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup with a listless, 1-0 victory over Barbados yesterday.

Eddie Lewis scored in the 21st minute off a through ball from Freddy Adu, who started his first World Cup qualifier. Lewis took the pass and put the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Alvin Rouse for his 10th goal in 80 international appearances. The game was played at the Kensington Oval, which is a cricket ground.

The United States already was way ahead in the home-and-home, total-goals series following an 8-0 rout at Carson, Calif., on June 15, and advanced on 9-0 aggregate.

"This was an opportunity to use different players and it is important to get some young players experience," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. "We had the confidence that we were strong enough defensively that we would hold together to get the win. Barbados deserves a great deal of credit for the mentality that they brought to the pitch today. From the start they played aggressively and tried to push the game more."

The Americans, seeking their sixth straight World Cup berth, will be joined in the regional semifinals, to be played in the fall, by Cuba, which won, 4-0, yesterday to beat Antigua & Barbuda in an 8-3 aggregate; Guatemala, which defeated St. Lucia on 9-1 aggregate; and 2006 World Cup qualifier Trinidad & Tobago which needed a 2-0 win at Bermuda yesterday for a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Barbados, a Caribbean island nation of about 282,000 people, nearly tied the score in the 58th minute when Emerson Boyce's header beat American goalkeeper Brad Guzan but bounced off the crossbar. John Parris put the ball in the net for Barbados in the 86th after Mark McCammon won a challenge with Guzan, but McCammon was called offside.

The United States changed seven starters from the first leg, keeping only Guzan, defender Heath Pearce, midfielder Michael Bradley and DaMarcus Beasley, who moved up to forward from midfield.

Three of the U.S. starting midfielders - Bradley, Danny Szetela and Sacha Kljestan - could be part of the American Olympic team this summer, along with Adu.

Advancing to other CONCACAF semifinal groups from weekend play were Canada, Costa Rica, Haiti, Mexico and Surinam. *
