David Beckham not named to Great Britain Olympic soccer team, will be eligible to play in Major League Soccer All-Star Game at PPL Park

Much to the surprise of observers on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, David Beckham was not named to Great Britain's Olympic soccer team.

Each men's team at the Olympics is allowed to have three players over the age of 23 on its roster, and the 37-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder was widely expected to be in the British trio.

It would have been a sentimental decision more than a soccer one. Beckham is a London native, and worked hard on the city's candidacy to host the Summer Games. Had he made the roster, he likely would have been the team's captain.

Instead, the three over-age players will be Manchester United's Ryan Giggs, Liverpool's Craig Bellamy and Manchester City's Micah Richards. Giggs and Bellamy were expected to be named, so it seems that Richards was named at Beckham's expense.

The Olympics' loss will be Major League Soccer's gain, though. Beckham will now be available to play in the MLS All-Star Game at PPL Park on July 25, the day before the men's Olympic soccer competition begins.

Beckham will surely be on the All-Star team, and will likely start. Presuming that he does, here's where I think he'd slot in to the XI I wrote about last week:

And for the heck of it, here's how I'd fill out the rest of the 32-player roster from the players on MLS' ballot:

Goalkeepers: Jon Busch (San Jose Earthquakes), Dan Kennedy (Chivas USA), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Defenders: Steven Beitashour (San Jose Earthquakes), Aurélien Collin (Sporting Kansas City), Lee Young-Pyo (Vancouver Whitecaps), Carlos Valdés (Philadelphia Union)

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake) Davide Chiumiento (Vancouver Whitecaps), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Jeff Larentowicz (Colorado Rapids), Marco Pappa (Chicago Fire), Chris Pontius (D.C. United), Mauro Rosales (Seattle Sounders), Brek Shea (FC Dallas)

Forwards: Fabian Espindola (Real Salt Lake), Kei Kamara (Sporting Kansas City), Danny Koevermans (Toronto FC), Fredy Montero (Seattle Sounders), Saër Sène (New England Revolution)

Voting continues through July 2. Click here to submit a ballot.
