Next stop for Allen Iverson . . .

The Clippers? According to a report in yesterday's Los Angeles Times, the Clippers are in "very serious" talks with Iverson on a free-agent contract.

In the past week, speculation was that Iverson had drawn interest from Memphis and Miami.

Iverson is a four-time scoring champion who spent his first 10 1/2 seasons with the Sixers before being traded to Denver in December 2006. Last season, the Nuggets traded him to Detroit.

He was limited to 57 games last season because of a bad back and averaged a career-low 17.4 points.

Noteworthy

The Magic surprised - and disappointed - Gortat and the Mavericks, matching an offer sheet to keep the Polish big man.

Gortat's agent, Guy Zucker, said the center "was definitely very disappointed today." He said Gortat was back in his native Poland, where he'd already been telling everyone he was headed to the Mavericks.

Gortat was hoping to play alongside Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki and, most of all, compete with Erick Dampier for the starting job. In Orlando, Gortat will likely see spotty playing time behind Howard.

Gortat, an 6-11, 240-pound center, made about $700,000 last season, his first full year in the NBA. But he earned the big pay raise in large part because of a few stellar playoff moments.

* The Phoenix Suns have reached a contract agreement with free-agent center Channing Frye.

Frye, who averaged 8.2 points per game in two seasons, agreed to a 2-year contract. He will earn about $2 million next season.

* The Denver Nuggets acquired Arron Afflalo and Walter Sharpe from Detroit in exchange for a future second-round draft pick.

The Pistons freed up close to $1.8 million in salary cap space.

Afflalo averaged 4.9 points in 74 games last season.

Sharpe played in eight games with the Pistons last season. He also appeared in four with Fort Wayne of the NBA Development League. *

* Getting paid $34 million to back up Dwight Howard on the Orlando Magic for the next 5 years might sound like a good gig. It's just that Marcin Gortat was looking forward to having the chance to start for the Dallas Mavericks.
