oswalt doesn't have it anymore. i'm not sure that worley is great, but he's at least as good as blanton was for us in 2008. he should get the nod.

Worley s starter, and now there is the Blanton conundrum. Oswalt will be in the Pen but whereof Joe???? Gone?

I've been saying for weeks Worley is better than Oswalt right now.I'm not saying he will have a better career than Oswalt...just saying he gives the Phillies a better chance to win right now.

Unbelievable how quick everyone is giving up on Oswalt. He is 5-0 career as a postseason starter. Has the best career ERA on the staff. He has "struggled" this year buy his standards and in comparison to the rest of the greatest staff in baseball, but how can you feel more confident for a playoff in a rookie that's had a great half season (like Happ 2009, like Kendrick 2007) over a guy like Oswalt that has excelled in pressure situations for a decade?

I am of the belief that Oswalt needs to continue his struggles over his last reg. season starts to convince me to go with Vance Worley. Although after a 162 games, Worley shouldn't be looked at as a "rookie", he still has no playoff experience. The Phils of 2007 could roll the dice with Worley (no WS victory expectation; we were just happy to be in the playoffs). This year is different; only, and I mean ONLY, a World Series championship will make this season successful. Too much riding on it for Worley. Now if Oswalt DOES continue to struggle, all bets are off and Worley should be the starter.

The past is the past. Presently, Worley is better. Plus, he is smart enough to know that you should not be operating heavy machinery when your job is starting MLB pitcher. You might hurt your back and let down your team.

Still have to say Oswalt, but I really want Cholly to keep him on a short leash. We saw what active managing can do in the playoffs with Bochy last year in Game 6, rescuing his team from an imploding Jonathan Sanchez. Kendrick in '07 and Happ in '09 did not fare well in the playoffs. And Happ in '09 was just as good as Worley in '11.

That said, Oswalt has rubbed me the wrong way several times this year, with the heavy machinery operation, saying something about how he should be paid more for "starting" 2 straight games (it was a joke, but still), and yesterday's comments about the bad defense (wasn't he part of that?).

I am definitely not discreditting Vanimal's great season. He has the heart and drive to be successful...not Roy Oswalt career successful, but definitely a solid 3rd or 4th starter. Oswalt has an amazing win percentage in the months of September & October throughout his career. I realize Roy is on the decline of his career, but you can't pass up Oswalt's experience.

About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com Reach Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com.
