Trade Update

POSTED: Monday, September 20, 2010, 1:55 PM

The news coming from the Denver Nuggets camp is that the franchise is now taking phone calls regarding their star, Carmelo Anthony. That's a different position than last week, when the Nuggets were reportedly still focused on convincing Anthony to sign the 3-year/$65 million extension the team has (and still has) on the table.

If you want the details surrounding the initial trade speculation involving the Nuggets/76ers/New Jersey Nets, you can scroll down to the previous blog post. Or you can click here: Trade Talk. There, you can find the potential pieces involved in the trade speculation.

But here's the latest from the Sixers' side (and the following is probably true of nearly all NBA teams): The Sixers will be contacting Denver. By the time you're reading this, the Sixers might have already contacted Denver about what it would take to land Anthony.

According to one source with knowledge of the Sixers' thinking, the franchise still believes this to be a "shot in the dark," but added that you never know what can happen in these situations. It's been reported by ESPN's Chad Ford that Denver wants "a young prospect, draft picks, and cap relief" in exchange for Melo. Can the Sixers meet those needs? Does Iguodala qualify as a 'young prospect', or would that mean Turner's inclusion?

And here's this bit from ESPN's Marc Stein and Ford:

"I'm not sure how soon, but I do think they're going to trade him [between now and February]," said one rival GM.

Said another source briefed on Denver's plans: "There's no doubt they are working on it. Eventually they're going to pull the trigger. "

Reports have persisted for weeks that Anthony, who can become a free agent at the end of the coming season, wants out.

According to the same Sixers' source, the team would listen to all possibilities surrounding this trade, including being a conduit (a third team in a three-team trade) that doesn't land Anthony, but lands a different player in exchange. Again, scroll down to the previous blog post for speculation regarding what this could look like.

The possibility of the Sixers' landing Anthony still remains quite slim, but the front office is in the process of seeing what the Nuggets would want for Anthony, or what it would take to be a part of a three-team trade built around Anthony ...

ssball3333: "Right now, the Nuggets have an extension offer to Anthony for 3 years/$65 million. So far, he's not signing it. He's said he would consider moves to the Knicks, Nets, Bulls, and Magic. We don't see the Sixers on that list. If they did pull off a trade for him, which is unlikely, would he want to re-sign with the Sixers? That's in (serious) doubt." From Kate Fagan four days ago. Just in case you are unaware: THE MAGIC ARE IN ORLANDO. Unlike you, I will not repeat that last sentence.

I agree with converse b24. I think it's up to melo. The sixers BY FAR have the most to offer.. It's not even close. Dre and Thad TOTALLY replaces melo . And melo gives us a clear cut undisputed leader WHO CAN DELIVER! Come to Philly melo!

phillyroni: I'm black, so I'm not welcome at klan meetings either. I was actually referring to Spade as in "shovel or scoop" as in he Scooped up LeFraud & dug his own grave (figurativley speaking). Or would D-Spayed be better? As in have you pets spayed or neutered. That might work too. It's okay, they got it. He didn't get it but they got it. Oh one side note: Nash left via free agency & "leaving Dirk high & dry" is hilarious. Ok so he left another star high & dry?? That shows he'd rather do it on his own merit if anything. Dirk didn't cry his way outa Dallas either after Nash left. And I'm not from Dallas. I guess your comment goes under "When playing the race card goes wrong". Nice try though.

I hope we just use some comon sense in whatever we do cause we are so hungry for a star in this city that we have a tendency to go out and acquire has beens like talent. Cris, Glen, Toni, Williams, and most recently Brand! If we sell the farm to get Melo then who do we have to play with him? We got one consistant player and we trade him that doesn't make sense. We can't wait forever becuse the young players will also eventually get old. The Sixers missing player is a big dominant bigman inwhich is not on the radar in any city so untill we find this guy we need to keep seaching.

Unless Melo agrees to sign an extension on his contract, I'd rather not have him on the team. Give up the farm for 1 year... pass. Although I wouldn't put it past stiffanski. Everyone should be expendable on the Sixers roster except for Turner and Holiday. I'd rather a 3 team deal which would land us Favors & Murphy or Lopez. I'd give up Iggy, a first round draft pick and expiring contracts for that.

Don't want Melo and his ego. Too much to get him and he likely won't sign here. If you're willing to take a step back this year then you try to acquire Favors. With Holiday feeding him he would be better than he was in college. Still a long term project but he could be part of a very talented nucleus to build on.

I'm down with being the middle man to land Favors. A few months ago I was dreaming about how awesome it would be to get both Turner and Favors this year, despite knowing that Stefanski would never work something out to make it happen. But now with Rod Thorn (the man who drafted Favors) in our front office, it may actually happen. As for Carmelo, no thanks.

"There is no way that Anthony would sign an extension with the Sixers; most likely, he will look to Orlando"

--have you not been reading the articles on this subject? Thus far, 'Melo has said he would only sign an extension with the Knicks, Nets or Bulls.

I don't think it's right to give up the younger players for Anthony, maybe Willie Greene and Brand and Kapono and draft picks if necessary. But we might be better off letting this one be and seeing where we con go this season with the new situation we have.

I don't want this deal. Sixers are very young and with a new coach. They're not going to find some team to take Brand off their hands, so just develop the youth and in a few years, we'll know more about what kind of talent they really have. Melo wants to play in NY which means the Sixers will not be able to keep him. Why give up so many pieces for a guy you can't keep?

XMarkstheSpot is on the mark in this instance. There is no way that Anthony would sign an extension with the Sixers; most likely, he will look to Orlando and set up a Florida war with the big three at Miami, or possibly look to the Knicks or Nets for the seriously HUGE bucks and the limelight. Also agree that Derrick Favors has become the Flavor of the month because Turner, out of shape, struggled in the joke summer league and now everyone wishes to dump him. At least, I trust Rod Thorn more than Ed Stefanski.

Great trade idea. For the Sixers. Do you really think that Denver would trade 'Melo for Turner and a #1? Keep dreaming.

There's no way I would trade away Iguodala, picks, and possibly Turner for a one year rental of Melo. Melo is not going to re-sign here - he made his list and we're not on it. So why are we going to give away our best player and future draft picks for nothing? Now, if we act as the conduit between the Nets and Nuggets and can somehow get Favors from the Nets and some picks, then I'm listening.

Keep Iggy to complement Jrue and ET and a resurgent Thad. Let's see what happens this year before we trade for Carmelo or anyone. I'd prefer to see our homegrown talent grow up together and win.

The Sixers are a very deep team with good talent, so I think we are in a great position to give up just about any three guys to get Carmelo. One great player can make a huge difference in basketball. Melo's team will surely make the playoffs every single season and with just a little help, go deep as well. Giving up Holiday, Turner and Young for him would be a stretch but with our depth, we could still field a good back court with Williams and Iguodala and even have solid backups in Green and Meeks. Naturally, a contract extension would have to be signed to even consider dealing for him.

People, lets get our heads on straight. Say we do trade for Carmelo, then what? He leaves at the end of the year for more money/a better team, and we just put ourselves in the hole for one season of Carmelo, which wouldn't end up with a championship anyway. Doesn't hurt to look, but doubt this trade would do much good.

I'd love to have Melo Man in a Sixer uniform. Unfortunatley LeFraud, D-Spade & them ruined the culture of the league and now stars only wanna play with other established stars. So Melo would not sign with us. The LeFraud ripple-effect has already stymied our attempt at drastic improvement and the season hasn't even started. You need $$$ now (Que the Million Dollar Man's theme song). The culture of the league has changed to sissies. The only stars I admire now are KD, Dirk, & Nash. They don't cry their way out of town or leave a team high & dry. That's a competitive fire. I'm not gonna join ya, I'm gonna beat ya. Don't trade Dre unless we are getting a star in return. Not some prospect (Favors) that, by all accounts, had an even worse Summer League than Turner did. I mean wassup wit u guys? Trade Green, Kapono, & Smith to GS for Beidris.

Iggy's my man!..But i'd take MELO over Iggy anyday!...This is the type of blockbuster trade that will Stefanski need to stay aboard ship!..This trade, along with the players named, doesn't hurt this team in no sort of way. It helps this team, revenue, & city. Sixers new Management with Thorn, must get stay aggressive in building a championship team. Melo would be a sure sign, along with Turner, Collins. We all know Iggy is not a star!..While we can't be scared of the salary of a qualified every year All star team in Melo!...He wants a chip so bad & so does this city!...So this should now be managements focus!...Let's all of us fans in our threads, let Melo we got his back as long as he's about his business!...lol & Go Sixers get Melo "LIKE YESTERDAY"!

Evan Turner, 2011 or 2012 #1, Kapono, Green, and either Lou or Nocioni...Nuggets' choice. $$ work. No brainer. If that imbecile Stefanski hadn't traded away Sam for nothing and even longer contracts, we'd have a pretty legit team going forward of Jrue, Iguodala, 'Melo, Brand, and Sam as a starting 5...or, Sam could've been included in the deal as cap relief and we could have kept Lou on board. Either way, we'd have had a more attractive asset base and greater flexibility. Ed Stefanski = Worst GM in Philadelphia Sports History. Could the guy have done any worse? Total jagoff.

Anthony would be worse for the Sixers than keeping Iguodala. Anthony takes more cap room and the team would still have the same problems. But if you can trade Iguodala and add Favors that could make the Sixers significantly better far more quickly. The team was stupid to draft Turner instead of Favors in the first place.

You have to have a superstar on your team to compete for a championship IMO. Anthony would give you that. Now, that said, we are years from competing for an NBA Championship but you can work on surrounding him with the right cast. You should not have to give up everyone to do a trade. You will still have a very good young and talented backcourt along with Anthony to start with and then proceed with that.
