Just after the Sixers/Nets held shootaround from 11-12 today at the RDX Sportsplex in Orlando, Sixers General Manager Ed Stefanski talked about the official opening of free agency and what that means for the Sixers, specifically point guard Andre Miller.

Here's Stefanski's answers to questions about what the Sixers might do in the next few weeks:

Have you made a formal offer to point guard Andre Miller?

“We have made an offer to Andre and [agent] Andy Miller. But they’re looking for a better offer from other places. And I’d say right now we’re in the mode of if there is a sign-and-trade that makes sense for both parties.”

How far apart are you?

“I’d say we’re far apart.”

Does anything change in what you’re willing to offer Miller because other point guards like Mike Bibby and Jason Kidd received longer, bigger contracts?

“To me it’s a market for Andre Miller, not what other people get.”

What sign-and-trades are out there, or have you discussed?

“A couple, but not a lot. Andy Miller is canvassing the league trying to see if there are sign-and-trades that are possible. Talked to a couple of teams, but I wouldn’t say there is anything that’s imminent.”

Are you far apart in years, money, both?

“It’s both.”

What’s the next option, if it’s not Miller?

“Lou Williams is going to have an opportunity here; we’ve been grooming him for 4 years. We gave him a contract last year to play basketball, so he’ll have a great opportunity. The kid, here, [Jrue] Holiday, we’ll see how he progresses. And we’ll obviously go out and look for a guy for that position, too.”

What kind of guy would you try to get for that position?

“I think we’d look for a veteran who would help and compete for that starting position. This would be Eddie Jordan's [decision]: Is it Lou Williams job to lose, or bring that vet in to compete with him and then see how the rookie progresses … that’s an option, sure, you have to plan for all the options that will be available.”

Is Stefanski okay with the option of Lou Williams running the point?

“I’m fine with the option, I think Lou Williams has a chance to be that guy. Give him a shot. We’re in a situation where we have a young nucleus of guys who have playoff experience, but we’re going to grow with them. And to go long-term on a contract with an older point guard, we don’t see that as being a viable option right now.”

Has Stefanski’s view of Miller’s value changed since last season’s mid-season trading deadline?

“It changes when the market place changes, yes. The market place has changed dramatically …Andre Miller did a very nice job for us, but where we are stationed right now and what type of team we have, to go long-term is not a prudent decision for our franchise.”

But Stefanski is willing to do 1 year with Miller?

“Well, that’s something you’ll have to talk to Andy Miller about.”

The Sixers/Nets summer league team plays tonight at 7.

Sounds to me that the Sixers see this up in coming season as wash. This is a good thing for this franchise to have a chance to turn it around.

The Sixers are in the driver's seat with Miller. There is NO team that is going to give him three years, thirty million. Miller's options are to take a mid-level exception from another team, hope that there is a team out there willing to do a sign and trade that is acceptible to the Sixers or accept the Sixers offer. Also, Mike Bibby's deal was three years, eighteen million. Miller is not nearly as good as Bibby. Miller and his agent are going to have to make a tough decision. It appears to me that the best option for him is take the Sixers offer. I doubt he will.

The NBA salary cap takes no prisoners. Having gone all in with a bust, Elton Brand, Stefanski is a member of the walking dead. It's just a matter of when he will be fired---the Sixers are trapped in that contract and of Dalembert (which admittedly is not his fault) and Igodala. They will win 40 or so games, last at most one round in the playoffs and get a crappy draft pick. Next year the same. The year after the same. Watch for a curtin going up over the second deck at the Center.

Part ways with Miller. He is a rock solid point gaurd but they can't pay him big money over 5 years and hope to escape mediocrity. They need to shed salary and see what they have in the young guys. Speights, Williams, Holliday, Smith.. They need to know if these guys can play or not.

They had to know this was going to happen why wasn't he moved at the deadline?

Don't back down on this one, Stefanski. Giving in means a Dalembert-type or Kenny Thomas-type contract. Let the rest of the league offer him better - if he gets something, he goes, and we're better off with a little cap space. The fans in Philadelphia know this is a salary cap thing above and beyond a keep Andre Miller thing.

If Stefanski thinks he can sign Miller, he is delusional. Time to move on!

Tell me again what Miller has won in his career to be so picky?

As mentioned earlier, I want the sixers to not make the playoffs this year. I would rather go with what I have, trade for what I can to get expiring contracts and rebuild with talent that is younger and be part of the organization longer. Unfortunately Sammy is stuck here forever but I really think either Iggy or Brand need to be moved just to establish a philosophy because AI will never be the shooter Brand to be a compliment to his game

Ed Stiff-anskee: you should haev traded Miller last season before the trade deadline, like we told you. The world knows (everyone but you) that Miller does not want to play in Philadelphia. Silly GM.

Serioulsy, Lou Williams as your starting point guard? Come on Ed. Wachovia Center is going to be empty next year. Gee, if you drafted a point guard who can play, this wouldn't be such an issue.

Why didn't Sixers trade Miller at the trade deadline last season. So now they get nothing for him, if a sign a trade doesn't pan out. I'm tired of this team bing a sub .500 or .500 team.

Win 42-44 games with Andre Miller or 38-40 with Lou Williams, Jrue Holiday & a cheap veteran fill-in? Take the 38-40 with Lou Will and get the 14th pick instead of 17th, then go from there. Sam Dalembert, Willie Green & Jason Kapono will all be in the last year of their deals.
