Former St. John’s forward JaKarr Sampson will play for the 76ers summer league teams.
The 6-foot-9, 214-pound forward went undrafted after opting to turn following his sophomore season three months ago.
“Toward the end and immediately following the conclusion of the draft, my agent [Seth Cohen of Verus Management] received several calls from teams expressing their interest in having me play for them in summer league,” Sampson said in a press release. “Seth went over all the team situations with me and we decided that the best opportunity for me was with the Philadelphia 76ers. I am looking forward to the opportunity, I will be ready and you can be sure I will make the most of it."
Sampson was the 2012-13 Big East Conference rookie of the year. He went on to average 12.8 points and 6.1 rebounds last season.
The Sixers will participate in the Orlando Summer League from July 5-11 and in the Las Vegas Summer League from July 12-21.
“Naturally, JaKarr would have preferred to be drafted, but he has the upside and ability and determination to earn his way on to an NBA roster,” St. John’s coach Steve Lavin said. “No doubt JaKarr has a bright future in basketball.”
