Sixers forward Marreesse Speights will be out 6 to 8 weeks with a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, the team said today.

Speights was injured in the fourth quarter of the Sixers' loss at Chicago on Saturday night and did not return to the game.

He underwent an MRI exam when the team returned from Chicago and was examined by team physician Dr. Jack McPhilemy.

The injury is a substantial blow to the Sixers because Speights has been one of the team's best players early this season. He is averaging 13 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in 23.4 minutes per game off the bench.

"We are discussing options and looking at a list of possible replacements, but don't see quick move," team president and general manager Ed Stefanski said in an email to the Daily News today.

The Sixers have 13 on their roster and 12 available players. Primoz Brezec will be active for the first time since the season opener when the Sixers resume play Wednesday at home against Charlotte.

Exactly, PhillyNH... When I hear folks comment "who cares", well I DO! I want a decent Sixers team to watch again.

The day Pat Croce quit, was the day the sixers died....Snider needs to retire and give up the power...

The day that they made the trade for Chris Webber, aka Elton Brand, the sixers were destined to mediocrity for at least the length of his contract. There are no mulligans in the NBA. The GM made a fatal mistake in a salary cap sport. Where is Billy King when we really need him?

Relax guys, the sixers will be fine. No lottery pick for you losers.

One has to feel genuinely sorry for Speights. But the record of putrid mediocrity, 325 wins and 350 losses since 2001, is unworthy of this great city.

I believe this injury will give Eddie Jordan the opportunnity to play the best lineup they have now (Lou Williams, Kapono, Iggy, Thad & Sammy). They play much better with Thad at the 4 and Iggy at the 3. Keep Elton Brand's the way they are now. Any extended time for him and it could be another season ending injury.

Hate to sound negative but this is a double negative which could turn out good if we end up in the lottery!

Unwatchable team in a sport that is almost unwatchable.

Quite literally, Speights was the one and only 6er who was worth routing for these first few games. It's tough to be upbeat about the team right now. I would give Holliday some important minutes. Oh, and I would throw Brand in the nearest dumpster.
