Sixers Sign Turner

POSTED: Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 4:43 PM

This comes as no great surprise, but the 76ers have signed first-round draft choice Evan Turner.

Turner, a guard from Ohio State, was the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft in June.

By the rules of the collective bargaining agreement, his contract includes two guaranteed seasons plus two option years.

Turner, who won several national awards as Player Of The Year, led the Big 10 in scoring with 20.4 points per game and in rebounding with 9.2 per game. He was the first Division I player to average at least 20 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists in a single season since Oscar Robertson in back-to-back seasons with Cincinnati in 1958-59 and '59-60.

Turner was not particularly impressive in five games in the recent Orlando summer league, but the Sixers attributed that to rustiness and being a little out of shape. He had not played competitive five-on-five basketball since leaving college, mostly because his representatives wanted to be cautious before the draft.

The sixers made a mistake of some size. Darn and things were looking up. I hope I am wrong but I would go for the more athletic and guys with higher ceilings. Am I stupid to worry that he is a little too slow to cover the good guards and will at best be pretty good and maybe not better than Iggy?

Wow! I was worried that some so-called Sixer fans would watch the five summer league games in Orlando and decide that Evan Turner was a bust. What's that? They have posted that Turner is a bust based on Five Summer League Games? You must be kidding! No serious fan could possibly deduce that from five exhibition games played 90 days after Turner's last college game. What's that? the same "fans" thought Jrue Holiday was a bad pick because Ty Lawson was on the board and Holiday played poorly in the Orlando Summer League in 2009. What's that? Holiday was unstoppable in the 2010 Summer League. No kidding?

Believe me I hope Turner is not a bust....again like Iggy i don't think he is going to be a Star...work a number two pick. I am a long time sixers fan since the Dr J days I just have seen many many bad sixers drafts over the years with very few exceptions so I never get my hopes up.

This is why hind sight is 20/20, but what if the Sixers would have traded Dalembert for a shooting guard and drafted Cousins?

All of you ignorant haters should go root for the Nets now that Billy King is their GM. You're a perfect fit for each other! The Sixers are going to be a lot more fun to watch this year, especially without Dalembert clogging up the offense, and they're going to make the playoffs. That's a nice start...

Iggy is a bust for his contract. But he is perfect trade bait for a big man such as.....Brook Lopez. That trade is a win-win. Nets drafted a big man so Iggy would fit in well there. Then we start Lopez, Brand, Thad, Turner, Jrue. I like that.

I agree it seems if Turner is better suited at PG. It's very difficult to find a center. The Sixers missed the boat on Cousins. Rebounding is formost.

Mr. Smit, How is Iggy not a bust? He can't shoot and he can't play off the ball. Watch a game, read the wikipedia hoops section, and come to grips with the fact that Iggy gets paid #1 money with #3 talent. We should off load his salary through trade and really start fresh.
