The news might seem like a thunderbolt to the Sixers, that Elton Brand will be missing for a month with a fracture and a torn labrum in his shoulder. They just changed coaches and now they're going to have to spend an extended period of time essentially marking time until Brand returns and Tony DiLeo gets a chance to integrate him into the running game the franchise so desperately craves.

Except that there is something that can be accomplished in Brand's absence.

Call it Operation Sammy.

The goal should be two-fold: to get Samuel Dalembert out of the funk into which he has sunk this season, and then to trade him for the shooter that this team needs so badly.

Sammy is big. Sammy can run. Sammy can rebound. When whatever weight of the world that rests upon his shoulders is lifted, he gives you something. For an outsider looking in, he has a couple of the unteachables -- big, fast -- and he can resemble a nice piece in a rotation. Weighed down, like this season, he is a waste of playing time. But get him going, galloping, excited again, and you've got something.

In Brand's absence, the Sixers can attempt to re-create what they had at the end of last season. There is a decent chance, in fact, that they will look better in Brand's absence than they have with him on the floor, that they will re-discover their intensity and their legs without everybody tripping over themselves in an attempt to defer to everybody else. Some people might mock that. The correct reply goes like this:  given time and health, Brand will make them better. He is not the reason they slowed down -- the rest of them are the reason. And come playoff time, if there is a playoff time, Brand will make them a far more viable team than they were last spring.

But a shooter remains the gaping hole in the blueprint. Dalembert might be able to get them that shooter. At this point, though, Dalembert will get them nothing. They need to re-find whatever he has lost, re-capture the fun for him, and then do a deal. Marreese Speights can fill his role -- he's doing it more and more anyway.

So that's it. That's how the Sixers make this month productive.

Couple of things: First, the Sixers gave the ultra red carpet treatment to Josh Smith, and he just would not come here, so that was not an option. Second, I have to question the comment about racism. Just because any player stinks or is dumb and a fan thinks so does not constitute racism. Beyond that, how do you know the nationality of the poster? Get over it already.

HEY , I SAID IN A PREVIOUS RESPONCE THAT MAREESE SHOULD START AND BRING SAMMY OFF THE PINES.I SEEN HIM PLAY HERE IN FLORIDA,HE'S STONG AND CAN RUN. DEVELOP A REAL INSIDE GAME ,AND I'M SURE HE'LL HANDLE IT.OR BRING HIM IN FOR BRAND'S SPOT TILL HE WORKS HIS WAY BACK

JimG and Reese great post. The Sammy bashing is too easy, even some borderline racist comments are out of touch. If you trade Sammy, I can't think of a shooter that can take Philly to the top. Unless Philly wants to play him alot, raise his stock, than dump him then thats your opinions. He still is one of the better pure centers in the NBA, and Speights is a rookie learning from a veteran. Speights is erratic on defense and he will learn the ropes of positioning and blocking out, proper assignments etc.

Pointing out Sammy's offensive deficiencies is like shooting fish in a barrel...to me the real mystery is how someone so long and athletic can be so useless as a rebounder in traffic...i can't tell you how many times i have watched in wonderment as players smaller and less athletically gifted have outhustled and outpositioned Sam-I-Aint under the basket for rebounds...he only seems to get those bounds that are uncontested...part of it obviously is a palpable disinterest... or perhaps it's an unwillingness to move his a** to get in position...stealing a biblical reference...as a basketball player Sam is more of a immobile, unfocused, golden idol than a MOSES...golden idols, if i recall correctly aint gettin' us to the promised land...bring back a MOSES to part the waters..ah those were the days...

JimG if you think Sammy doesnt make as many or more mental mistakes as Speights.. you arent watching enough Sixers games. You dont go 24 minutes against the world champions and manage only 4 rebounds, 0 points, and a turnover. You cant even fault foul trouble because he only had 1 that game.

in retrospect, was BIlly King all that bad? The Josh Smith comments ring true. In addition, the K we signed IGGy to may go down as one of t he worst in the history of the NBA. The guy is at best a #3 option and is a turnover waiting to happen. he hasn't played defense since his rookie season.

trade him for a shooter? isn't that why they got rush and marshall...

I watched Shawn Bradley...I winced at Shawn Bradley running...Sammy is no Shawn Bradley. Sammy has some major short-comings, but he does a ton of things on the floor that make a big difference like JimG said. I think the best thing to do when Sammy is really struggling is take him out of the game and now we have Speights who is getting better all the time. But if he concentrates on the things he does well, Sammy makes the team a lot better. The more uptempo game will help him I think. I loved having that shooter in Korver, although there were times he would get abused on the defensive end. You always give up something to get something it seems.

Rich. This team is done. The day they signed Elton you could kiss the next 3-5 years away. If they had two superstars on this team Ok. But that's not what they did. Stefanski never stated he thought they could win a chip. 160 million for third place if I remember correctly. We will have to wait another 5 years to get out of this cap mess again. They have two chances. Thaddeus becomes the next McGrady and Speights is the next Bosh. Don't hold your breath. The only other chance they have is for Brand And Iggy to get hurt so they lose a bunch of games and get a nice lottery spot. Then they have to get lucky they pick the right guy. That's it. This team should have been gutted at the All Star break. They needed Draft Picks and Cap space. I would have traded Iggy and Miller. They needed Mayo or Rose. I would trade places with the Memphis Griz in a second. Two young Superstars, another High Draft Pick coming and millions under the cap. Exactly where every team is fighting for there lives to get. Just because you have the money doesn't mean there are players on the market to spend it on. This was the year to pass. This had to be the weakest Free Agent Market in years. Stefanski Blew it.

Samuel Dalembert should start packing his bags. After all these years in the NBa. Trade him and start speights.
Comment removed.

Sicen Sammy is from Haiti, ship him to the Chester Pro Soccer team. I'm sure he knows more about soccer than bball... he has zero bball IQ.. he's just tall.. Shawn Bradley had more skillz. SAMMY STINKS!!!

Sammy is a popular choice for fan-bashing but compared to the rest of the "centers" in the NBA, he's actually pretty solid. He rebounds well, he blocks shots and alters a ton of shots, he starts fastbreaks when he blocks his shots instead of blocking them out of bounds like most guys, his 10-15 jumper is much improved, he's a solid FT shooter, he attacks the offensive glass, etc. Some of you guys who like to whine and complain about everything always focus on what players can't do instead of focusing on what they can do. Sammy's numbers have gone up and down this year because Cheeks couldn't figure out his rotation. Sometimes he would get enamored with a particular line-up and leave Sammy on the bench for long stretches. When the guy gets 30+ minutes in games, he produces. Anyone who actually understands the game of basketball understands that defense has been the biggest problem for the Sixers this season. When Sammy isn't out there, the defense is a lot worse. Speights is going to be a good player but he's a poor defender right now, makes a lot of mistakes on the court and often gets out of position. He may "look" like more of a basketball player than Sammy to the casual fan, but it's about wins and losses...not "looking good" on the court. If this team played solid defense, hustled for 48 minutes (like they did the last year and a half) and took better care of the basketball, they'd have a lot more wins right now. Adding some guy who is going to make 1-2 three point shots a game isn't going to change much. They've got Marshall and Rush if they want that.

I always think of the line from "Coming to America" when Eddie's character is at the St John's game and he's asked "What games do you play in Africa? Chase the Monkey?" That's what I think about seeing Sammy play Bball. (even tho' he's Haitian)

I agree with the Josh Smith comments. The problem is not that Brand is not a great player. The problem is that they got an older, injured player instead of staying young and getting Josh Smith. That, if I am correct, was not Mo Checks doing !

Agree to start Speights... If anyone would trade a shooting guard for sammy, take it before they realize sammy is the Milennium version of Shawn Bradley... Just ask Jimmy Lynam...who traded Penny Hardway for Bradley long ago... It's like deja vu...

This guy was a project when drafted and continues to be one. Athletic, blocks shots and rebounds ok, and runs the floor fairly well, but is utterly useless on the offensive end. Unload him soon please!

If they wanted to run; why did they get Elton Brand instead of Josh Smith?

Everything happens for a reason. This is Sam's chance to flourish, and show some other team starving for a big man that he has some skills. Then, dump him on them suckas for a headshooter. Tell them to call BK for references! Its a shame that as many years as he has been playing professional ball that he has not been able to develop 1 low post move. Speights is for real, that kid has a nose for the ball. I like that he and Moses are from the same city.

I would trade Sammy for a basketball player with no legs. I mean come on. This guy is the worse...WORSE Center in the league. Give him away at this point. Bring back Korver. What a dumb move that was to trade the teams best outside shooting threat. DUMB as usual.
