Sixers agree to terms with Royal Ivey

POSTED: Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 3:38 PM

Guard Royal Ivey has returned to the Sixers, coach Doug Collins told reporters today.

The 6-4 Ivey played in 71 games with the Sixers in 2008-09, averaging 3 points per game in 12.1 minutes as a reserve. Ivey appeared in 26 games the following season before he was traded to Milwaukee in the deal that brought Jodie Meeks.

He spent the last two seasons with Oklahoma City, playing in 25 games two years ago and 34 games last season. He also appeared in five playoff games as the Thunder reached the NBA Finals this past season.

In eight seasons out of the University of Texas, Ivey, 31, has averaged 3.4 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists.

Collins also announced that Kwame Brown passed his physical. The 30-year-old center will be joining his seventh NBA team since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick out of high school in 2001.

Are you joking? You can make the argument that the NBA has never had a deeper crop of talent. All the guys from the 2003-2006 draft classes are in their primes, some older guys from the 90s like Kobe, Duncan, Pierce, and KG are still knocking around, and the draft classes of the last 4-5 years are starting to mature, starting with Kevin Durant. The main problem is instead of having 22-24 teams like in the 80s, when another bumper crop of talent was in the league, you have 30 teams vying for top talents. The league should contract 2 or 4 franchises; that way guys like Danny Granger and Iggy could fulfil their destiny as a team's James Worthy; a great third option who cannot carry a team to a title alone.

I just don't get this or the Kwame Brown signing. If they are truly "bridging" to a re-build post Iguodala, why not fill these spots with young, emerging talent that might have a chance of helping that process down the road? Really like what they did in getting N. Young and D. Wright, bringing back Lavoy and even re-signing Hawes, who still young and on a very reasonable (and tradable) deal for his skill set. Clearly, we're stuck with Iggy for another year, but will get to see what Turner and Holiday and the new rookies can really do. Giving any time to Brown and Ivey will just take away valuable minutes from kids who need the playing time.

Okay, I get your point with Brown. I would rather see Allen and Moultrie develop than watch Kwame, but the guard position is in a different situation. Turner and Holiday, our young guards are going to start. They will get their minutes and right now we don't have anyone else other than Nick Young, who is a wing player (SG, SF) and should not ever play the point. There are no other young guards on this team for Ivey to steal minutes from unless they sign an undrafted FA lie Jacob Pullen, but honestly, Ivey is a decent player, a good defender and a good back-up to fill out the roster.

Imagine the Sixers' management in deep, deep complex thought.. who should we sign to make our team better? Then a voice, we don't know who, says " go get Kwame Brown and Royal Ivey". The fans will love it and well there really aren't any other options! Euphoria sweeps the room knowing that they have done their creative best. Sixers' management is now at peace. Wow, are these guys good.

These transactions are not part of a championship plan for this season. These are roster-filling moves that will give the Sixers a couple expiring deals for the 2013-14 season. The plan is clearly to roll the dice in FA in the summer of 2013, and if that doesn't work out, they will have flexibility to trade players and/or expiring contracts during the 2013-14 season to obtain someone they covet. 2012-13 is meant to compete and give the core of this team one last run-out to see what pieces are keepers and which can and should be shopped.

that is what the team is saying and that is also what they are trying to sell us. Unfortunately for us Mr. Stern has other ideas.
