Sixers, Bynum merchandise not moving off the shelves
John Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
Andrew Bynum hasn’t shown up on the court, and he is a no-show on 5th Avenue as well.
The NBA on Wednesday released the list of its top-selling individual and team jerseys and LeBron James, who led the Miami Heat to the NBA championship this past season, and the New York Knicks – who haven’t won a championship in decades – are the winners.
The list is made up of the top 15 selling individual players and the top 10 teams. The list is based on the sales at the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue and on NBAStore.com from April 2012 through Nov. 26.
Even thought he was vilified for leaving Cleveland to sign with the Miami Heat almost three summers ago, James, No. 4 on the list the last time it was released, now that he’s won a title, isn’t seen as the villain he once was. The Knicks, who haven’t won a championship since 1973, still have a strong fan base, and they play in the country’s largest market. Last year they were second on the list behind Chicago.
One might think that after the Sixers acquired Bynum in that massive four-team, 12-player deal that there might have been a spike in Sixers jersey sales – and there could have been, but the league doesn’t release player numbers outside of the top 15 and team sales outside of the top 10.
I dare say that the Sixers and Bynum would have seen a huge jump in those sales – even though he didn’t become a Sixer until August – if he were out there playing and not hurt. Putting a healthy Bynum with numbers even remotely close to the ones he put up last season would probably have the Sixers atop the Atlantic Division or, in my opinion, at least tied with New York for the division lead.

Well there is Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner left. Evan can become a star if Collins allows it. Not like he has too much of a choice if he is really about winning games. Holiday is going to be a star regardless. Zeru- While this hasn't worked out for the NBA, there's a similar list on PBA.com - Bynum has the all time best selling bowling shirt.
I've included a 'Bynum's Knees' jersey on my Christmas wish list. Tedyuscung
Gee, you think there is a connection there? Probably right up there with sales of Flyers merchandise. Neither are playing, could that be why? PhillySubsMac
Bynum's no show to this point and rumors are he may not play at all this season. Can the Sixers void his contract for any reason? How could a player who was a force last season get signed by a new team and suddenly have serious injuries that prevent him from stepping on the court? Did the Sixers completely miss the bus on this one? tkearney609
Miss the bus? They didn't have a clue the bus done come n gone. Oh well, good to pick up 97 cent tix from stub hub to the Sixers game last night. The $15 parking fee is what kills me lol albrock
Collins hatred of young players has hit its climax. He traded a good center away (Vuc), another player with very good potential (Harkless) and we could have had Toronto's pick for Iggy which could have very well turned into Andre Drummond who is having an good year in limited minutes. Just think.. If we could have hired a coach with patience and the willingness to play young players you might be looking at one of the most talented, young, up and coming teams in the league (Thunder). Now we are married to a 24 year old center with fix a flat glue in his knees. Zeru
@'Zeru': though I'm not completely on board with crushing Collins, I agree with your larger perspective that the trade was not simply dumping TooManyDala's contract. We gave away lots of draft picks and a center (Vuc) who at one time was very highly thought of and in the first 1/2 of last year played very well. People who think that there is no downside to Bynum sitting out this year and then signing elsewhere are ill informed.
Beyond that, I've had knee problems my whole life. Scoped, experimental therapies, Joe Namath's doctor. All of it. And I have never ever heard a doctor use the phrase "cartilage is in a weakened state". It's another black eye on the local media that no one has called up like 5 doctors from another city (not Philly, not LA) and simply asked them if "cartilage in a weakened condition" is a common diagnosis. People with P.T. Bynum's amount of money can find and pay a doctor to say anything, but is what is being said a real diagnosis or just "last year of contract" cover?

Bynum merchandise?...Is this a joke?...At this point in time, a Bynum "Hair of the Day" kit, gift certificates for Orthokine Therapy, or a brochure on "How to bowl safely" would all sell better in the Delaware Valley...Get em healthy, on the court, and then fans will follow suit soon after, buying gear. bearsfriend
I bought one. It's hanging in my closet next to my Sixers Jamal Mashburn jersey. Right next to my Phillies Danny Tartabull jersey. AreaMan- Bynum merchandise: The Bynum Gutterball..... for that special bowling partner. Great for gags and moonlight bowling parties, The Bynum Gutterball has been designed with internal gyroscopes that will not allow it to remain on the lane at any time!
But seriously, this trade has alienated a lot of fence sitting fans towards this franchise. Especially in these hard financial times, it is hard to take when your franchise center arrives damaged, somehow becomes further damaged in the interim and then has a blase' attitude about it all when asked of it. In the meanwhile, this has blackened the eye of the GM, figuratively. An unfortunate series of events....
Buynone rather than Bynum. What manner of fool would buy a lousy product? 2ndNlong
I don't think he has even donned a Sixers jersey. Why would I buy one pretending he did? dlscholt
Bynum's stuff is selling on a par with that of Matt Geiger. 4thand10
Just shocking info in this article.... Ssteve115
