Kwame Brown joins Sixers

POSTED: Friday, July 13, 2012, 3:29 PM

The Sixers on Friday signed free agent center Kwame Brown to a two-year, $6 million deal, according to a report that first appeared on Yahoo Sports.

Brown, 6-11, will get the opportunity to start if he can beat out Spencer Hawes, last season’s starter. Hawes and the Sixers have reached agreement on a two-year, $13 million deal.

Last season, Brown appeared in just nine games with Golden State before suffering a torn pectoral muscle in his chest. He has season-ending surgery in January.

Brown was drafted by the Washington Wizards with the first pick in the 2001 draft. He was the first player to be selected out of high school with the top pick in the draft. Current Sixers coach Doug Collins was his first NBA coach.

In 11 pro seasons, Brown averaged 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. The Sixers are his seventh pro team.

It can't hurt...I'm just glad that he ain't costing too much, he's a big body, and you might get something out of him. Nothing big out of him, but at the very least he's more athletic than Tony Battie. Besides, there's no big stud out there that is worth pulling the trigger. You can't go and trade for Howard; Orlando's FO is outta their minds if they didn't take what Brooklyn was going to give them for Howard, ESPECIALLY since he's coming off of back surgery and you ain't sure what you are getting...They are standing pat until someone studly presents themselves

I hope the Sixers trade Iguodala for a big, preferably Gasol or Al Jefferson if they're available as well as sign a backup pg like Aaron Brooks. Right now, the projected lineup might look like this: pg-Holiday/Turner, sg-Wright/N.Young, sf-Iguodala/T.Young/Harkless, pf-Allen/Brown/Moultrie, and at c-Hawes/Vucevic/Watkins. Good luck!

Collins wouldn't take him if he didn't think he was useful. Useful is good.

My prayers are answered!! The Sixers make a big splash and sign a center who was a No. 1 pick straight out of high school!!! Oh, wait. I'm getting word now that it isn't Dwight Howard. Nevermind.
