Bynum might not return until January

POSTED: Monday, November 12, 2012, 11:26 AM

The 76ers announced that Andrew Bynum might not be able to play basketball until January because of his knee injury.

In a statement, the Sixers said that Bynum had an MRI exam on Nov. 5. The diagnosis from Dr. David W. Altchek of New York's Hospital for Special Surgery, who also is Bynum's longtime personal doctor, moved the time back three weeks when the center could resume basketball activity.

If all goes well, Bynum would be able to return to basketball activity on about Dec. 10. The team said he will need an additional 1 to 4 weeks for "conditining, training and practice before before being able to resume game play with significant minutes."

Sixers GM Tony DiLeo said in a statement: "We know that Sixers fans are eager to see Andrew Bynum play and shine in a 76ers uniform. We also know that no one is more eager to see Andrew play for the Sixers than Andrew himself. He fully realizes the key contribution he can make to the team. Hopefully, that day is coming soon."

I am stunned, I say, stunned. Please! The national pundits were saying end of November at the earliest, while the local media swore they were incorrect and the Sixers stonewalled. Very badly handled.

I am reluctant to see anything but positives with the Sixers given they are our only hope in Philly. The Sixers organization managed a major overhaul giving them a great chance of success this year as well as for years to come. They are playing inspired ball with the exception of the Knicks games. We welcome Bynum in January and look forward to a nice playoff run!

Yep, he's Jeff Ruland all over again. Don't get me wrong he probably has some more great basketball in him-- just not for us.

Bynum will come back by February when the games start to matter more once the NFL is over. Sixers will make the playoffs without him -- we just need him to dominate for two dozen games or so in the late spring.

Is there another city that has seen it's professional sports teams recieve players in trade that were damaged goods as soon as the ink on the trade was dried like good ole Philly? I mean back-breaking, franchise destroying trades that set teams back for years and in some cases, decades. The Ruland trade killed this team for close to 20 years. The Freddy Garcia trade still haunts this team as Gio Gonzalez seems to be coming into his own as a pitcher. I'm sure there are others our more learned and seasoned posters can bring up. Now this trade. Good money on the table says come January, the debut will be set back until March and come March........

It's not so much getting rid of AI2......it's the overall price that hurts in the long term in draft picks, players already traded. The sneaky suspicion is that Bynum gains new found health and playing status after his year in Phila. is up. Not a good send-off for Rod Thorn or debut for DiLeo in this Katzian-like transaction!

Did the Sixers get hosed and trade three 1st round picks for "damaged goods?" Or - is the "new" bone bruise a legit injury that really happened after he became a Sixer? Hope this doesn't have an adverse affect on the youngsters who have been playing hard after sleep-walking through the NY games. If I bought season tickets based on the Bynum acquisition, I'd be pretty ticked off right now. And, if the organization hid information to sell tickets, I'd hope a savvy class-action lawyer takes them to court (the other kind).

The Sixers need to say "Thanks for everything Drew, please see yourself out and good luck in free agency." Letting this guy play half a season and then signing him to a huge contract will put this team back in basketball limbo for another five years at least

My first time commenting, but have been a regular reader for a while. A few facts to consider. Iggy's deal had two years remaining, with the second a player option, with his aversion to being here, he would have likely opted out after this season and sought out more guaranteed money for the long term in the open market, he still is considered valuable by most teams in the league. If gerald wallace got 40M, (albiet from Billy King), Iggy surely could get a deal in that range. With that said we did not really improve our cap situation in this deal and the risk taken is really the young players we let got and the draft pick. Iggy's money was gonna likely come off this summer if he opted out, same with bynam's contract ending,so our cap situation would have been the same, while still having the young players and the draft pick. With that said, ideally the sixers would like to have a healthy Bynam, the cap space will not net us any all stars as we are still not considered a free agent destination for top stars in the league, so thats the reason for the trade(getting a top talent outside of free agency), nothing to do with the money/cap, it would have been a wash.
