Bynum might not return until January

POSTED: Monday, November 12, 2012, 11:26 AM

The 76ers announced that Andrew Bynum might not be able to play basketball until January because of his knee injury.

In a statement, the Sixers said that Bynum had an MRI exam on Nov. 5. The diagnosis from Dr. David W. Altchek of New York's Hospital for Special Surgery, who also is Bynum's longtime personal doctor, moved the time back three weeks when the center could resume basketball activity.

If all goes well, Bynum would be able to return to basketball activity on about Dec. 10. The team said he will need an additional 1 to 4 weeks for "conditining, training and practice before before being able to resume game play with significant minutes."

Sixers GM Tony DiLeo said in a statement: "We know that Sixers fans are eager to see Andrew Bynum play and shine in a 76ers uniform. We also know that no one is more eager to see Andrew play for the Sixers than Andrew himself. He fully realizes the key contribution he can make to the team. Hopefully, that day is coming soon."

I don't know anything more about Bynum than what you Yahoos on here seem to think you know. What I DO know is that Iggy is a great defender. Can you spell 0-2 vs. the Knicks because no one can guard Carmelo? Who will guard Lebron, Pierce, etc., etc.?

Definitely not happy that I guessed right about this piece of news. Now would it be too much trouble for the local reporters to ask about what the MRI actually revealed?? Should we assume some type of soft tissue injury or ligament damage took place? This has to be one of the oddest ways I've ever seen a team handle a delicate injury situation. "Oh sorry everybody, it turned out it was a completely different injury than we never really told you about anyway. It's going to be a little while longer, hope you all scooped up those season tickets for the best seats to see the nightly 3-point shootaround we'll be putting on the floor!"

Now what happens if Bynum comes back in January and say, carries them to the Eastern Conf. finals? How do you give him a max contract? How do you let someone else give him a max contract??

Need Bearsfriend to weigh in on this. This was gamble from the get go. Comparisons to Jeff Ruland are accurate. We DO KNOW that this is a 1 year rental. No obligations on both sides moving 4ward. Mr. Bynum SHOULD UNDERSTAND this too. If the 76ers are smart they will cut bait with him when this mercifully comes to an end in 2013. I am not optimistic he will play in January. Just MOVE on with the big fella.

    Hey 6ers,
I think it might be time to put that center ad back on careerbuilder and monster (yeesh)!

Bandwagon fans...Sixers traded Moses for Ruland so i get the backlash. But...How does trading Iggy's bloated contract plus throw-ins compare to the Ruland trade. We still have a promising squad and Bynums expiring contract. Iggy didnt want to be here anyway...get over it.

Mayor Nutter needs to suggest a proclamation changing the name of this town to "Negadelphia". Granted, things look bad right now, just like they do for the Eagles, but things will get better. Stop being so negative. I know it's not always easy, but at least try.

I think the 76ers did know this was a big risk but, after years of being regulated to irrelavance, the potential upside of this deal out weighed the downside. You have to take some chances and make changes if you want to change a culture. Standing pat was not the naswer!

Kobe got the best of Philadelphia again. Sixers are IDIOTS. How many times are they going to get conned into taking big men for tens of millions of dollars who are worth nothing.

this trade was made for the sole purpose of unloading iguodala's contract. having bynum actually play games would have just been icing on the cake.

    Hey Pink Floyd:
If he's "damaged goods," why would another team take him in a trade. Seems you're brain-damaged goods.

lol, for the same reason we took a chance on him dummy! I'd bet more than half the teams in the league would take him right now. If he only plays a quarter of the season and puts up solid numbers, you don't think teams are gonna line up around the block for this guy if we decide to pass. Just because everyone is pessimistic around here doesn't mean the guy is suddenly worthless. I was only posing a hypothetical situation anyway, that since they now get to see him up close and do whatever medical tests they want. If they now deem his knees to be too risky for a substantial investment, why not explore a trade. Other teams would still love to have him, even if people here don't. For the record, i'd bet he plays and plays well at some point. Then we sign him long term just so fans have something to cry about.
