Agent: Kwame Brown to sign with Sixers; Silas has concussion

POSTED: Friday, July 13, 2012, 2:00 PM
The Sixers have signed center Kwame Brown to a two-year deal worth $6M. (AP Photo)

Kwame Brown's agent said Friday that the center has agreed to sign with the Sixers. Brown, who played for Sixers coach Doug Collins in Washington, would fill the Sixers' big-man void.

The agent, Mark Bartelstein, also told Yahoo Sports that the deal was for two years and $6 million.

Brown, 30, averaged 6.3 points and 6.3 rebounds  in 22.4 minutes last season for Golden State. He has averaged 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds in his 11-year NBA career.

He was drafted first overall by Washington in 2001. He has played for Washington, the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis, Detroit, Charlotte and Golden State.

The Sixers announced the re-signing of center Spencer Hawes. The team did not disclose the terms of the contract. Hawes has played 118 games (110 starts) and averaged 8.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.01 blocks in 22.4 minutes. He shot 47.4 percent from the floor.

In other Sixers news, Xavier Silas was injured at the team's final summer league game in Orlando on Friday. The initial reports indicate that the team is concerned that injury could be a skull fracture. Silas has been sent to an Orlando hospital. The Sixers announced that Silas suffered a concussion and possible frontal bone skull fracture.

Also, Yahoo reported that Elton Brand has been picked up off amnesty waivers by the Dallas Mavericks. The Sixers used their amnesty clause on Brand last week.

Interesting that Kate Fagan predicted Kwame coming last year. From what I read when Kwame was with the Lakers, he was a good rebounder and passer from the high post. At center, this is what DC covets. The issue that lies with Kwame is that he has the tools to become a decent player, but he has a very low drive to improve albeit a low motor. Also, when he was with the Wizards, he did not take criticism well. Curious on why he would want to come back to DC where DC and Jordan destroyed his confidence.

Again, another piece that can be moved in order to sign or retain the right players next off season. We're really only looking at 3 mil for one year with him which may not be much more than the league min for his tenure. We'll see what he can do.

It's a Player option. No chance he doesn't take the 2nd year. We'll see how many teams come knocking down the door to take Kwame Brown off our hands next year

A collection of mediocre players might be just what Collins wants and the guys he likes to coach in his team concept. But a team without two go-to players (or even one in the Sixers case) isn't going to be a true contender. Kwame signed? Doubt he makes it the year with Collins on his tail.

This isn't about this year: Kwame stinks. It isn't about next year: Brown will be cashing checks that could go to someone who can actually play. Or is it aboug Doug's ego, our genius coach/de facto GM showing us that he can recreate the tremendous success he had in Washington with one of his ex-Wizards? Oh. Doug didn't succeed in Washington? Sorry.

Well, they got the big man everyone was clamoring for (althoug not Kwame Brown), and he is certainly well rested, having played in 9 of the 66 games last season. One thing for sure, the Sixers are a big team and Collins is apparently intending to move Hawes to the four, leaving a starting five potentially of Holiday, Turner, Iguodala, Hawes and Brown, potentially one of the worst shooting starting five in NBA history. Of course, Nick Young might start at the two, with Turner coming unhappily off the bench.

i get the other signings and trades this offseason. i even get drafting mo harkless. i get the plan to build tradeable assets while determining how good the turners/holidays/thad youngs of the team will be. i don't get this one. especially for two years. there's much better talent out there that would sign the same contract at the same price. this isn't a tradeable piece! this isn't someone who will give anything more than what tony battie gave you last year! this is how computers get tossed out of homes! i'm shutting mine down and going for a walk....to the nearest bar....to spend $ that was going towards season tickets!!!!!!!

It is official, people that work for the Sixers must comment on here. When Scola is about to hit the market you guys really like the signing of Kwame Brown? (in my Stephen A. Smith voice) Just laughable.
