76ers trade Evans for Kapono
The 76ers have confirmed that they have traded power forward Reggie Evans to the Toronto Raptors for sharp-shooting guard-forward Jason Kapono.
The Sixers issued a press release at 2:43 p.m. Here's what Sixers General Manager Ed Stefanski said:
“We are very excited to add one of the league’s most prolific three-point shooters in Jason Kapono,” Stefanski said. “We feel that this move addresses our goal of improving our shooting from the perimeter.
“I want to thank Reggie Evans for his contributions to the team for the past two seasons and we wish him only the best.”
The deal appears to be financial for Toronto: Evans will make $4.6 million this upcoming season and $5 million in 2010-2011. Kapono will make $6.2 million this coming season and $6.6 the season after. The deal will be finalized when both players pass their physicals.
Evans played sparingly this past season, but is one of the league’s most physical players and usually makes a big impact on the defensive end. Evans averaged 3.3 points a game last season.
In Kapono, the Sixers get one of the top three-point shooters in the league, which is the area in which they have struggled the most for the past two seasons – finishing last in the NBA both those years.
Kapono shot 42.8 percent from three last season, averaging 8.2 points a game.

great trade! finally a real 3pt threat. robm0202

What's not to like about this! jimbo712- Not bad duffers
This is a steal any way you slice it. brannigan73
hell yes! sad to see evans, his enthusiasm, and his equally awkward facial hair/post moves go but I'm psyched to get a sharpshooter with a 3pt% greater than willie green's fg% (note: did not check that fact at all). evans wasn't going to play with brand and smith coming back and speights maturing anyway. all kapono has to do is stand at the 3pt line and wait for the drive and kick from iggy, thad, miller. how's his D kate? Matt M.
Kapono seems like the perfect fit for the Princeton offense, which in its purest form (run by the orange and black themselves) is predicated on three-point shooting and backdoor cuts. Even in regular pro sets, having Kapono on the court (a true three-point threat, unlike the disappointment that was Kareem Rush this past year) will only help Iguodala, Thad, and Brand by giving them more room in the lane. The key for Kapono, from what little I've seen of him, is to cover for him on D enough that he can stay on the court. Statman
This is a solid move. Kapono is the "name" threat they need so they can spread the floor for EB. Also with Speights having a solid rookie season, we don't need reggie anymore in the 4 spot. We have enough big men in Brand, Speights, Smith, Dalembert, and Thad (kinda when he plays the 4). The salary difference isn't too bad either since both have 2 years left. We gave up Reggie and roughly 1.5 million a year. The only last downside is that Zumoff won't be able to say "lunch-pailing" every time reggie touches the ball. oldcitymatt
great trade mpads
A nice upgrade over Korver. Reggie's PT would have dropped anyway with a healthy Brand and J. Smith and increased PT for Speights. DennyP
Matt M.: your instincts are correct ... Kapono's career 3-point pct. is 45.4% (tied for #1 career in NBA history with Steve Kerr). Willie Green's career FG pct. is 41.6%. If the Sixers wanted a 3-point shooter, they got one of the best (and the bonus was that they gave up an essentially extraneous part in Evans to get him). Statman
Great Move! Also make time available for Jason Smith and Speights! Now time to move Sam Dalembert! Jersey Rob- What's next? Move Iggy or Sammy for a shooting guard?
Nice job Stefanski. AllDawk_AllTheTime
Philly has a basketball team? just messing around...good trade but do we really care.. We watch Eagles and the Flyers, then Phillies start in april, Sixers Stink fman727

Wow! I'm stunned! I'm betting Ed knows the fans wanted a three point threat and that he had to deliver. I'm sad to see Reggie go because he was the one player to bring defense, energy and fun to the game, but we need a 3 point specialist. My only worry is that when a player comes to philly their game seems to go downhill. Also I hope they don't try to get on Kopono for his defense as they did with Korver. I would't mind bringing back Donyell to be that off-the bench 3 point threat like he was this past year. Hell one year and the min vet should do it. You can never have enough big men. Remember we lost Brand/Smith & Dalembert was far from reliable this past season. joesmooth2u
I like this trade but will he start? Move Thaddeus to the 4 when he's on the floor? wearethechampions- I do not like it! Should have sent Willie Green! He sucks
Dalembert for Hinrich straight up. sprew
lol i agree with fman727 canada51stSTATE
Typical post about how someone doesn't care about the Sixers after they read an article about the Sixers and took the time to post a comment about the Sixers. Obviously, YOU care or you wouldn't be here reading about the Sixers and posting about them. Nice move to pick up Kapano. They needed 3 point shooting and they pick up one of the top five 3 point shooters in the NBA. Gotta love the hustle and attitude that Evans brought to the team but with Brand and Smith coming back and Speights developing, there wasn't going to be any PT for him anyway. JimG
fman do you really think your comment was meaningful enough to post? Matt M.
We haven't seen Kapono play for the sixers yet...but I think he's gonna play well for us...and with Evans gone, it basically clear room on the bench for the GREAT JASON SMITH....LOL!!!! it's still a good deal for the sixers...now getrid of Iguodala... xrajux
Nice, now we just need a good young point guard in the draft and this young team should gel over the next few seasons and become contenders NBAdraftRoom.com

Nice trade, now for a nice guard who can direct, shoot and guide this refreshed team. KGKoons
Not a bad trade but if he is the starting SG, what happens to Young? Iggy will get the start over him because of his contract. Young is a good player and probably deserves to be a starter. Sixers may have to trade Young to get some other chips. smw1021
Hammer = Sammy is unmovable. (Unless he's in the paint guarding a big man. ) Move iggy for a shooting guard. He's the only decent chip we have. You can't move Young for a stud SG because the numbers would never match up. sportscolumn.com
I like getting Kapono ,but would have rather given up Willie Green if they would have taken him;nonetheless, upgrades our outside shooting.. scotty_one
Cheesesteak with fried onions..extra mayo..salt, pepper and ketchup. This is all you should ask for in return for Samuel Dalembert. If the team can throw in a Frank's Soda...it's equivalent to hitting the Powerball. Sammy get ready pal...1st thing smoking!!! your outta here rodney517- Good pick up. Jason's 3pt FG% is down from prior years but still better than we've had. OK Ed, first move is a good one. Let's see what else you have up your sleeve. Get Smarmy Dummybert out of here and I'll say you're on your way....
I may have to change my username if more deals like this are made. Good job big Ed stefanskimakesmesick- This is a steal to me. Don't think Evans was going to play much next year with Elton Brand and Jason Smith returning from injuries and the development of Speights. EL Zorro
Too good to be true, though keeping it in perspective it's just a piece of the puzzle. Feel a little better about Ed right now. If he can move Sam I'd feel great. Point guard in the coming draft? Gonna miss you Reggie. Your a Philly kind of guy! Trifecta
This was the only 3 point player that I saw fitting into our system. He is a specialist in the line of Korver. But I think he has more overall talent. Evans as mentioned by others was a liability on the offensive end and was only standing in the way of the development of Speights and Young. With Jason Williams coming back we would have had to many bigs and not enough minutes. This would not be a problem if it wasn't for the fact that we have young guys still developing and need as much PT as they can get. I see Speights, Brand, Thad and Jason thriving under Jordan's style of offense. Sammy????? Bye Bye Sammy! Tejayanie
While this does liven up the afternoon let's keep things in perspective. He's a bench player. Drafting 17th should land us a nice player, nice being the key word. However we still don't have a stud super star, and that's what you need in this league to win it all. Trifecta- that was such a good move, too bad we cannot afford to throw in sammy. I hope he likes the bench playing behind Jason. I can't believe we could have had hibbert last year!! Still sammys money continues to be problem. Good agent, I guess. Thanks billy king.
There has to be another shoe to drop here. stunod

Basketball reference . com lists the leaders in career 3 pt %. Kapono is 1st at .454 .20 higher than Nash. Ray Allen is .398. Great move. jonnyB

More to come...? psuwelsh
the fact that this guy averaged only 8 points per game last year makes this only a slight team improvement chollie
Agree with everyone -- cannot watch Sixers play 4 on 5 for another season when Reggie's out there, and they're deep at that spot -- but be aware that Kapono is literally one of the worst defenders in the NBA which is why he doesn't play more. Here's some of Hollinger's scouting report on JK [for '08]: "Opponents attacked Kapono any time he stepped on the court, and his inability to respond kept him on the bench despite his solid shooting...Kapono is a subpar athlete who ranked dead last among small forwards in both rebounds and blocks per minute, and second to last in free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt." I still like the deal because getting anything of value for Evans is a plus, but he's going to be a 15 min per night stop gap sub...instant offense off the bench when needed, nothing more. They still need a PG who can shoot as well as run the O [R. Alston?] and/or a solid shooting 2 who can defend, at least a little. But good start. jmk1512

I actually had a conversation last week with Ed after I told the Sixers that, as a season ticket holder, I was disappointed in the Jordan signing and thought this was more pursuit of mediocrity. Stefanski was very open in admitting this was/is a work in progress, that this is not a championship caliber team, that more shooters were needed (along with other stuff), but that Jordan at least brings a system with him, having not had one in recent past. I'm keeping an open mind, and hope he builds around what should be a decent nucleus. doctorj
Thank god Evans is gone the worst offensive player ever! arocketsa
Good luck Reggie, wish you well in Toronto. Welcome to Philly, HAIB, I wish you multiple years of success wearing the Red, White, and Blue. jhnesunshine

Good move. Too bad a few so-so trades preceded it. Iggy and Brand are paid way too much and Sixers are stuck in mediocrity for the next few years. i want to see 2 terrible years for the Sixers and at least 1 lottery pick. CheapPhillies
Nice move in the right direction. I still think Dalembert does not get enough respect for his contributions. MoeP
im from toronto and from our end we cant believe someone took Kapono off our hands you will learn very fast how awful he is as a defender and u will hate his running one handed floater in the lane which he shoots more than 3's. The raptors dont have a gritty guy and we are happy to have someone with a little grit on our team hopefully it works out for both team but i doubt u all will be happy with Kapono he is probably the worst defender in the NBA raptorfan
This is a good addition to our roster. I am worried about this lack of defense, but we had Kyle Korver here playing at his snails pace, so we should be fine. I think the key now is to re-sign Andre Miller. Our line up would be 1. Miller 2. Iguodala 3. Young 4. Brand 5. Dalembert. Bench: L. Williams, Kapono, Speights, J. Smith. If Young, Speights, and Smith can step up and play to their potential, we could have a solid team. Be positive Philly! FlySixPhiEagles
i am not familiar with K but it sounds good from the comments. I am a big Reggie fan. Maybe we can trade willie green to toronto for reggie. maximus- What's next? I think they're going to move Thaddeus Young for a point guard and probably Sammy for another big. Jason Smith, Elton Brand, Iguodala, Kapono and the new point guard.

kapono is a bump raptorfan
Yeah Baby, We are making some improvements, keep it coming! Hey Boston, Orlando, Cleavland, we are coming so you better get ready and when this team gets set we are going to be runnig things for years to come. rayzoe
Fantastic move. Next, I am hoping they figure out a way to get Brandon Jennings in the draft. His stock is down, but he is a great playmaker. Draftexpress has him going #13 to the pacers, so it shouldn't take much to move up enough to nab him. Throw someone the #17 and Green or Williams and bam, he's ours! Sixers- 2010 NBA champs!!! incog69
good trade. now we just need to draft ty lawson and we'll be able to run and gun. projected starters/backups: lawson/williams, iguodala/green, young/kapono, brand/speights, and smith/dalembert. in a dream world, stefanski would be able to trade brand and young for amare stoudemire, kobe opts out and returns home, dalembert's traded for tyson chandler, and iguodala moves back to the 3. uscwee
Intersting trade, but in gaining a shooter the team has added yet another SF to a team already bloated at that position and we've made the team EVEN WORSE defensively. Much worse! So, the value of this move will *unquestionably* be determined by the kinds of other moves that happen this summer. Need for a point guard is big, and now the need for defensive toughness is just as big. Iggy and Thad on the same team, with Kopono and Brand? Either one of them must go, or the game will now need to be played with two balls. Hobbes
Reggie played hard and played defense. If he was that much of a 3 point threat then why did Toronto unload him and why did he only average 7.2 points a game. That means 2 3 pointers and a foul shot. He doesn't play defense. Isn't that why Korver was traded and he was a 3 point threat. Get real 76er fans. The Marco Islander

Good move! Now its time to find a new home for dalembert!!!!! filly fan- Mr. Stefanski strikes again; Thanks-terefic move...johnnyu
- Even if Kapono disappoints (and, alas, it's possible), Evans wasn't much to give up to take the chance. I'm expecting big things from Jason Smith next season.
Nice job! Any takers for Dalembert? sheek2109- I'll admit, I'm not an expert on basketball... but isn't Koppano another three? Aren't Iguodala and Young both threes? Wasn't part of our problem before this trade that we had many people at the same position... the three? Hutch

Is his "D" better than Korver's? That is usually the problem with these three pt specialists. Also, for everyone who says the Sixers are irrelevant, they were very competitive with the Magic in their playoff series. Note that the Magic are in the NBA finals and are giving as good as they are taking against the Lakers. centercity19146
Evans you will be missed! Mr K.
Honestly, some of you guys sound like you have never watched a game, especially a Sixers game. Dala and Thad have been dealing with packed lanes on their drives, Kapono can give you a floor spacer who you cannot leave under any circumstances. That means one less guy who can collapse into the paint. His presence is what is important. Yes, Evans had some positives, but they traded him for a guy who improves your offense by checking into the game. Meanwhile, he can be hidden defensively, by using zones, or filtering his man to designated help areas where Brand or another big can meet the driver. Tor lacked those type of Bigs. This is a good move rswknight
Wow. 8.2 points a game. I guess I'll be glued to my set next season. irtony
Nice! Now, what can we get for Dalembert? ginzo
