76ers trade Evans for Kapono

POSTED: Tuesday, June 9, 2009, 2:48 PM

Is this a good trade by the 76ers?
Yes
No

The 76ers have confirmed that they have traded power forward Reggie Evans to the Toronto Raptors for sharp-shooting guard-forward Jason Kapono.

The Sixers issued a press release at 2:43 p.m. Here's what Sixers General Manager Ed Stefanski said:

“We are very excited to add one of the league’s most prolific three-point shooters in Jason Kapono,” Stefanski said. “We feel that this move addresses our goal of improving our shooting from the perimeter.

“I want to thank Reggie Evans for his contributions to the team for the past two seasons and we wish him only the best.”

The deal appears to be financial for Toronto: Evans will make $4.6 million this upcoming season and $5 million in 2010-2011. Kapono will make $6.2 million this coming season and $6.6 the season after. The deal will be finalized when both players pass their physicals.

Evans played sparingly this past season, but is one of the league’s most physical players and usually makes a big impact on the defensive end. Evans averaged 3.3 points a game last season.

In Kapono, the Sixers get one of the top three-point shooters in the league, which is the area in which they have struggled the most for the past two seasons – finishing last in the NBA both those years.

Kapono shot 42.8 percent from three last season, averaging 8.2 points a game.

hell yes! sad to see evans, his enthusiasm, and his equally awkward facial hair/post moves go but I'm psyched to get a sharpshooter with a 3pt% greater than willie green's fg% (note: did not check that fact at all). evans wasn't going to play with brand and smith coming back and speights maturing anyway. all kapono has to do is stand at the 3pt line and wait for the drive and kick from iggy, thad, miller. how's his D kate?

Kapono seems like the perfect fit for the Princeton offense, which in its purest form (run by the orange and black themselves) is predicated on three-point shooting and backdoor cuts. Even in regular pro sets, having Kapono on the court (a true three-point threat, unlike the disappointment that was Kareem Rush this past year) will only help Iguodala, Thad, and Brand by giving them more room in the lane. The key for Kapono, from what little I've seen of him, is to cover for him on D enough that he can stay on the court.

This is a solid move. Kapono is the "name" threat they need so they can spread the floor for EB. Also with Speights having a solid rookie season, we don't need reggie anymore in the 4 spot. We have enough big men in Brand, Speights, Smith, Dalembert, and Thad (kinda when he plays the 4). The salary difference isn't too bad either since both have 2 years left. We gave up Reggie and roughly 1.5 million a year. The only last downside is that Zumoff won't be able to say "lunch-pailing" every time reggie touches the ball.

A nice upgrade over Korver. Reggie's PT would have dropped anyway with a healthy Brand and J. Smith and increased PT for Speights.

Matt M.: your instincts are correct ... Kapono's career 3-point pct. is 45.4% (tied for #1 career in NBA history with Steve Kerr). Willie Green's career FG pct. is 41.6%. If the Sixers wanted a 3-point shooter, they got one of the best (and the bonus was that they gave up an essentially extraneous part in Evans to get him).

Great Move! Also make time available for Jason Smith and Speights! Now time to move Sam Dalembert!
