The 76ers announced today that President and General Manager Ed Stefanski met with Doug Collins on Saturday in Phoenix, AZ regarding the Sixers head coaching vacancy.

Stefanski met with Collins along with assistant general manager Tony DiLeo, and Sixers consultant, Gene Shue.

In a press release, Stefanski said, "We had a very productive meeting yesterday with Doug to discuss the position and his philosophies. He is someone who has a proven track record as a head coach and has great knowledge of the game. We appreciate him taking the time to meet with us. We will continue to do our due diligence on all the candidates as we continue to narrow our search for a new head coach."

Stefanski will meet with another candidate, Avery Johnson, on Monday afternoon.

Collins is currently working as an analyst with TNT, but was formerly the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, and Washington Wizards. Collins, 58, hasn't coached since 2003. He has a lifetime NBA coaching record of 332-287. Collins played for the Sixers from 1973-81.

Great - a guy who hasn't coached at all in 7 years; hasn't coached a playoff game in 14; and had a losing playoff record (15-23 or .395) for the three years he got there. Thats what I like - build the team on a real solid foundation...

The wrong GM (Stefanski) interviewing the wrong candidate (Collins). If this organization keeps Stefanski and lets him continue to call the shots it will be 10 years before the 6ers recover.

The way I read this, they aren't necessarily considering Collins for head coach. Sounds like they're asking for his recommendations.

Why would anyone with half a brain take a job with no superstars and no cap space? Answer, they won't.

yea the roster is a mess but him or johnson would both be a step in the very distant right direction, possibly

He makes Tiger Woods look celibate. He was fired from the Bulls for having an affair with Jerry Krause's wife. Look out Eddie The Shot. Dougie has a propensity for hitting on the wives of fat GMs.

They're relying on Gene Shue to help out with an interview of Doug Collins? Why not bring back Jack Ramsay?

Once again, we hear that no coach worth his salt would take the Sixers job. Funny thing, offer enough money and ANYONE would take the job. Besides, all pro coaches have egos the size of tractor trailers. They all think they can turn a team around. I have to admit, however, there is nothing like the Three Blind Mice doing the interviewing: Gene Shue? Are they serious? Tony Dileo? Are they serious? Ed Stefanski? Are they serious? Where are Doug Moe? Roy Rubin? John Lucas? Brad Greenberg? Fred Carter? What a joke!!

Love that the 76ers are talking to Doug Collins. I have NO problems with him. I think he would be an EXCELLENT hire even with the tough experience in Washington. But then it was the Wizards, lol. He may not have coached in the league for 7-years but he KNOWS the NBA. Keep in mind his former coach Gene Shue was part of the interview. I find that news very interesting. GREAT work Kate! Lets see what Doug says Monday night during the Suns/Spurs game on TNT when he is quizzed by Kevin Harlan. Gotta believe TNT will do their due dilligence and ask him the "TOUGH" question. If he is muzzled and doesn't say much then we know he is VERY much in the mix to be the next hire. I think the Hornets and 76ers are going after the same people aka Johnson & Collins. Or could Collins be a smoke screen. While in Phoenix Stefanski could also have indirect contact with the San Antonio lead Budenholzer. He is a HOT name out there right now and does interest Philly. Why don't the 76ers talk to Scott Brooks? He too is former 76er. Maybe Mo Cheeks warned him about Stefanski, and Brooks does have a GREAT thing going in OKC. Why would he leave there? It's going to be interesting May and June. Gotta love it!

I hate Collins. If they do this, I am officially done. I can't take any more of this s____. They better push hard for Avery Johnson, Larry Brown or the assistant from Boston. We need a defensive minded coach who won't take s____ from these malcontents. I also like McKie as a coach - especially with this franchise.
