Spotty 76ers are trampled by the Jazz

You had to think that no matter how large the Utah Jazz lead grew last night, it would shrink again.

It had to: Utah was without all-everything point guard Deron Williams, entered the Wachovia Center with a losing record, and started an all-rookie backcourt.

The Sixers' Elton Brand , who scored 11 points, has the ball stripped away by Utah's Carlos Boozer, who led all scorers with 24.

But it never shrank. It expanded. It went from a bucket or two - no big deal, plenty of time - to a dozen buckets.

Last night, the 76ers were badly beaten by Utah, 112-90.

The lead was 26 points during the fourth quarter; it dropped to 14 for one possession in the fourth before bruising forward Carlos Boozer, who finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds, hit back-to-back buckets for Utah.

The Sixers slipped to 4-5; the Jazz improved to 4-5.

Williams, the Jazz' points and assists leader, was missing for personal reasons. Instead, Utah started a backcourt with rookies Eric Maynor and Wesley Matthews.

That duo combined for 29 points, outscoring the Sixers' backcourt of Lou Williams (10 points) and Andre Iguodala (11 points, 10 assists).

"When we looked at how Williams was out and they were starting Matthews and Maynor, we thought we could get into them a little bit," Sixers coach Eddie Jordan said. "But we didn't."

After the game, Utah coach Jerry Sloan unknowingly summarized the Sixers' defensive effort when he said, "We shot a lot of layups."

Maynor, who finished with a game-high 11 assists, had more to say: "We played from inside-out and we were knocking down shots, getting to the basket, and getting to the free-throw line. Once you do that and they can't stop you, you can get a quick lead."

Translation?

The Sixers' defense looked broken.

"Sometimes we worry about offense a little bit too much," said Iguodala, who added that it's "tough to win when you don't defend."

"We got blown out three times already this season," said power forward Elton Brand, who scored 11 points and did not play in the game's final 15 minutes. "The defense isn't there. Guys are walking into the lane, guys are getting wide-open jumpers, and guys are getting offensive rebounds."

The first quarter, while not a thing of beauty, ended with the Sixers ahead, 32-30. Jordan said he knew it was a hollow lead.

"I saw eventually the dike was going to break," Jordan said.

The Sixers' dream of victory disappeared midway through the second quarter with their second unit of Willie Green, Rodney Carney, Jason Kapono, Marreese Speights, and Jason Smith. With that lineup, a 43-42 deficit became 49-42.

Jordan said he wanted to see whether those players could "get a hold of the game for a little bit."

A few minutes - and a few reinserted starters later - the game was 60-46.

The announced crowd of 10,738 booed.

"You hope that you learn and you get tired of being pushed around," Jordan said. "If you really have a passion for the game and passion for winning and competing, then you won't get pushed around, you'll learn your lesson. I guess it's still early in the season, or I don't know. I'm from a different neighborhood; I just don't get pushed around. And if I did, I'm responding back. So, hopefully, our guys will respond to that sooner or later."

It's only 9 games in and Iguodala already seems beaten up psychologically. Last night he said Utah had "a lot of high IQ players" (meaning, we don't) and "a great coach" (meaning, we don't). He must know his contract makes him untradeable, and he looks across the locker room and sees the broken down Brand, sucking away money and salary cap space for years to come, and he must start to see that his basketball future as endless losing and faint flashes of mediocrity. No wonder his effort has been inconsistent this season. But you can't feel bad for him, he makes $80 million. 73 more games and 3 more seasons of this FUBARness. Brace yourselves. (iao).

This team stinks. The equivalent of the Phillies during the Ed Wade era. They will never win until they get a GM who really knows what he is doing.

This team is the worst 4-5 team I've ever seen. They've beaten the 1-7 Knicks the winless Nets and a Bucks team that hadn't figured out that Jennings could play yet. Jerry Sloan looked like he could coach a high school team over Jordan. What the heck is this offense????? Either this offense is terrible or the players can't execute it because it always seems to end up an isolation play with no time left on the clock. And for god's sake play Holiday, as fans we know you stink atleast give us something to look forward too. If both Brand and Dalembert are both in the starting lineup tonight I'm out. How can a guy making 80 mil not be able to hit an open shot. He's like a gold plated Reggie Evans.

Iggy must go. He wants to be the leader, but he can't lead by emotion only. Take him out of Philly. Let the new stars rise. Buy this cream puff midget out. He is another AI

We're only 3 games back and learning a new system, and look at all the doom and gloom, LOL, LOL, LOL!!! What a bunch of losers these posters are, LOL! Get out from behind your keyboards and get some exercise, it will make you a more positive person! I know, you've given up hope of ever getting in shape, and leading a minutely positive life! No sympathy here!

Sixers might be able to play better with what would be their strongest starting front court of speights, dal. and brand. What they do with the rest would be up in the air. Smith, carney, green, ivey kapono are a waste. Young, who even knows? Not a good defender, assist man, suspect handle and suspect shot.

Johnnydeagle: listen to the players after the games and to Jordan himself, and to Donyell Marshall and read Kate Fagan and Bob Cooney, and then question the posters here. They are three games back in a weak conference, only because they are playing in the worst division in pro sports, having beaten a depleted Nets team twice and an awful Knicks team and getting walloped by Orlando, Boston, Orlando, and Detroit. They have shown little sign of improvement in the new "system" you are touting, seem confused over the rotation, in which their prized free-agent acquisition, sits on the bench every fourth quarter and their highly touted draft pick sits virtually all the time (while Utah's two rookie guards have a field day against them), have a center who still commits stupid fouls, thereby limiting his minutes, and rarely play the hustling defense they played under Cheeks and Dileo. Don't blame the posters for the faults of ownership.

Snider should direct Stefanski to put most of this bunch (i.e., Iggy, Brand, Dalembart, Brand) on the disabled list, and bring Erving, Malone, Cheeks, Toney, and Barkley out of retirement. This city will then have a winner and pack Wachovia with fans too! The young bucks like Speights, Young, and Williams could give the all stars and hall of famers some rest.

We passed on Maynor in favor of Holiday. Another friggin' brilliant move. For once can we take the guy who can already play instead of the erratic guy with "upside?"

It looks pretty bad right now, especially for my guy Fast Eddy Stefanski. I can't help but feel for the poor shnook. Everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY was surprised that he landed a BIG free agent in Brand. All the media lauded his effort in bringing him here, including all of the fan base. And even though it was a little tough in meshing the gears early last year, you could SEE that Brand looked worth the price. But now, after the injury, and the constant roster changes, the coaching rotation and endless re-defining of the goals for this team.....it has come to this. I'm afraid that Fast Eddy is slowly walking the plank. I'm pretty sure he will last out the season, but will be heading elsewhere after that. Damn shame. I REALLY wish this could have worked out.

Our point is in Portland. Our two is in Utah. And our grit is in Toronto. Our problem is here. Need a GM that understands the value of defense and brings in a coach that does the same. There are few defensive skills on this team. Holliday maybe. Play out this year for the draft.

I have been a Sixers fan since 1975 but I wonder if this franchise will even be in the city in another 5 years.
