Bob Cooney: Brand an early concern for Sixers

IT'S EIGHT GAMES into the season, hardly enough time to have a full grasp on this 76ers team. We all know it has a new coach, a general manager about to celebrate only his second anniversary with the team, and a roster devoid of an upper-echelon player.

Yet, the first subject that pops up through e-mails, phone calls and text messages is the same: Elton Brand.

Brand
Brand

The generously listed 6-9 forward was brought in here, courtesy of an $80 million, 5-year contract, as the biggest free-agent signee in the summer of 2008. He wasn't thought to be the missing piece that, say, Moses Malone was to the 1982-83 team that won 65 games and strolled to the NBA championship. But it was assumed that Brand would provide substantially more than he has.

This is where it gets a little dicey in the arguments concerning his signing.

The other free agent the Sixers coveted was Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith. He was a restricted free agent, though, so whatever money the Sixers threw at him ultimately could have been matched by the Hawks.

The Sixers and general manager Ed Stefanski did their best to lure Smith - wining and dining him much as the Phillies did for Jim Thome before the 2003 season. But the fact that they ultimately could not lock him in hung like a black cloud.

So there was Brand, who was offered huge money from his previous employer, the Los Angeles Clippers, and from the Golden State Warriors.

This is where the poker thinking started. With the Hawks capable of matching what Stefanski could offer Smith, had he not offered a contract to Brand, he would have been left empty-handed.

Many might say that would have worked out best, as the Sixers then could have been patient, maybe suffered a year or 2 through poor seasons, and built the team with drafts and the money they had saved.

Of course, they didn't. They signed Brand, who was coming off a ruptured Achilles' injury. Matters were further complicated when Brand had season-ending shoulder surgery after playing in only 29 games while averaging 13.8 points and 8.8 rebounds in his first season with the Sixers.

Now, the situation has been thrown fully into a blender, as new coach Eddie Jordan doesn't appear to have enough confidence in Brand to have him on the floor in key situations. Brand has not played in the fourth quarter in four of the past five games. In those games, he has averaged only 24 minutes, 7 points and 5.2 rebounds.

A bad move by Stefanski to sign the Duke product? Perhaps.

Too early to tell? Again, perhaps.

This much is obvious: Brand is not the player who came to the Sixers with an average of 20.3 points and 10.2 rebounds in nine NBA seasons. He probably isn't as unproductive as the player who has averaged only 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds a game this season. But he is now 30. And maybe finding his old form after the injuries and at his age just isn't possible.

Brand is the ultimate professional. For weeks, he's been questioned by the media about what appears to be a deteriorating game, and for weeks he has answered every question. He is a workhorse on the practice floor. He is the ultimate teammate.

He also is a player going to battle without a full arsenal of ammunition.

"Elton is trying to find his way, no question about it," Stefanski said yesterday. "Basically he's had 2 years off from playing games. I think the more games he plays, the better he'll progress. [Wednesday night against the Nets], he was much more lively rebounding the ball early in the game. So I think it's a matter of a process here. And then of him not playing at the end of games - well, what's happening is a lot of teams that we've played so far are playing one 'big' and four 'smalls,' and the other thing is Marreese Speights is playing great basketball."

Which is another bone of contention among Sixers fans - a second-year player making minimum money taking minutes from the star free agent.

It doesn't sit well with Brand, either.

"I'm a realist, I understand," Brand said of the fans' frustration. "You get a good contract, and you're expected to produce numbers. But I just feel that in practice, I'm getting better. It's a long season. I have total faith that I'll be fine and that the team will be fine. That's the most important thing."

Yes Grandson. Some guy who had no heart, they named him McLoser.
The state of this team is depressing. Unlike others, i like Chief Blocka & don't think his contract was that bad of a signing. But the Haitian? And the Clipper? Well, their contracts make me want to fast forward to 2015 to see how the Sixers are doing. Bottom line, this team is not in an enviable position. And that sucks.

Lou and Andre are delivering. Like I said at the beginning of the season, if Andre's shot improves and Lou can handle being the primary guard, the Sixers will be solid. Or, at least be able to squeeze out 4 wins over teams who are a combined 5-20. Thad's slow start hasn't helped. But what really hurts is that Brand is now competing with Dalembert as the most overpaid Sixer.

just another in along list of bad signings...noose ($) around your neck signings...and these gm's keep getting jobs...there is a strong young core around which moves should be made to enhance their talents...brand doesn't fit in and it would be unwise to force his game on this young group...so what are the options...let him sit...only a cancer in the making...move him, eating a (large) part of his contract...or some mysterious career ending injury with a substantial buy out...should be interesting to watch as the value of the current gm surfaces

Brand is just another Chris Webber. Three more years of this....ugh. And how about the attendence? At these #'s the gross gate receipts might not even cover Elton's $16 million salary. Ed Snider....you the man!!!

Brand will be indispensable in the playoffs, as an inside post presence is mandatory. Brand is a banger, and the playoffs demand a strong post player with experience who isn't afraid to get physical! First third of the season is moot, until the players get the new O and D systems down!

Josh Smith was never going to come here. I repeat: Josh Smith was never going to come here. He was using the Sixers to pump up his contract with the Hawks. And it worked out for him. I have zero belief that Eddie Jordan is capable of making this work in Philly - his rotations are garbage and he has no defensive philosophy whatsoever. Of all the signings that Stefanski made, Eddie Jordan was the worst. But we knew that as soon as it was announced.

@ 2009Johnnydeagle. Brand is 6'8" and consistantly getting his shoot slapped back in his face. Don't count on him banging. @psv Smith got 50 something mil. Brand got 80 something mil. Where is the logic in you statement. How did Smith use the Sixers as leverage??? Brand was a bigger "name" so they signed him thinking it would draw fans. Thats the problem. Real fans will support the team if it is good whether or not they have a big name player. Josh Smith would have made this team better and he would have been cheaper. But what's done is done. Speights should be getting Brands minutes. The guy is getting 4 less minutes a game than Brand and still putting up better numbers

I've heard alot of talk about how Mike Tyson managed to blow 300-million bucks. Perhaps he secretly purchased the Sixers and approved of Dalenbert and Brand's contracts.

The Sixers were simply seduced by Brand's 20-10 abilities two years ago and forgot how deceptive statistics can be....especially those put up by good players on bad teams. I still cannot fathom how one organization can continue making the same mistake over and over again. It's one thing to be victimized once but numerous times is just unforgiveable. The best case scenario here though involves giving Brand more minutes at center in place of Dalembert or forward at the expense of the younger fellas (Young, Speights and Smith). Hopefully he can put up his usual 20 ppg with more touches and we can trade him to a contender. Unfortunately, finding one who can afford such a luxury as Brand on their roster is easier said than done.

It isn't a problem as long as Brand's game comes around, which it will. As his play improves he'll get more minutes. In the meantime, Speights and Smith are deserving of minutes and the added experience and depth will only help the team down the road. It is good for Dalembert and Brand to have players behind them pushing them. It would be good if Carney could push Young and Iguodala, and if Holiday could push Williams. It's not Brand vs. Speights, it's Dalembert vs. Speights.

I listen to alot of talk about how Mike Tyson managed to waste $300-Million. Perhaps he secretly purchased the Sixers and doled out Delambert and Brand's contracts.

See you in 5 or 6 years. "Enjoy" the ride. If the Sixers make money on this awful investments (Brand, Dalembert, Iguodala) then anyone can make money in the NBA.
