Should the Yankees go deep tonight as much as the Boston Celtics did against the 76ers last night, there will be a parade in the very near future going down Broadway, not Broad Street.

The Celtics drained 14 of 20 three-pointers, outscoring the Sixers by 42-3 from distance, en route to a lopsided, 105-74 win at a quiet Wachovia Center that held 11,251 fans.

The Sixers entered the game with the second-highest scoring average in the league at just over 115 a game and the Celtics were the stingiest defensively at 81.3. Guess who won that battle, if you could call it that.

"I would say in that outside of the first 6 minutes, when I thought we played really, really well, it was certainly a stinker," said Sixers coach Eddie Jordan. "We had an eight-point lead, then like most good teams do, they got their swagger up and they started talking about the defense and they put it to us. They took a front seat and we took a back seat. Their confidence grew and our confidence shrunk."

Boston proved it can kill teams in so many more ways than with just its defensive strangulation.

During a 5-minute, 2-second stretch that overlapped the first and second quarters, the Celtics erased a 12-4 deficit by hitting nine straight shots and building a 25-17 lead with 10:47 left in the half. The run included layups, short jumpers and long-range bombs. What it didn't include was a lot of contribution from the Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. No matter, sub Rasheed Wallace hit two treys and scored eight points during the spurt.

Three minutes later, when forward Shelden Williams threw down a dunk, the lead was up to 33-21. And when you possess a defense such as the Celtics do, that is just about an insurmountable lead, even that early in the game.

The margin got as high as 14 in the second quarter, though the Sixers finished the half with an 8-2 run that pulled them to within 44-36.

But any hopes of a comeback by the home team were squashed at the beginning of the third, when the Celtics scored 20 of the first 30 points to begin the second half.

Pierce led the Celtics with 21 points, Wallace drained six of eight threes on his way to 20 points. Eddie House (12) and Rajon Rondo and Williams (11 each) also reached double figures.

"You have a veteran team like the Celtics, they know how to play basketball," said Sixers guard Willie Green. "They know how to grit and grind, how to scratch and claw and win games. They're tough on the road and they take care of the home court. You just got to give credit where credit is due. They are one of the elite teams. They play good defense. They are playing pretty aggressive right now. I think the biggest thing for them now is they get great bench play from Rasheed, Marquis Daniels and Eddie House.

"They make teams shoot tough jump shots with a hand in their face. They pack it in, especially with us. They know we want to get it to the basket, we want to fastbreak, so they did a good job of packing it in and making us shoot tough jump shots with hands in our face, and that's not our strength."

The Sixers had few strengths last night, while the Celtics were powerful in just about every aspect. Boston finished with 27 assists on its 41 field goals, shot 41-for-72 (56.9 percent) from the floor, while holding the Sixers to 29-for-80 (36.3 percent). Had it not been for a Jrue Holiday three in the waning moments, the Sixers would not have gotten one. Instead, they missed 15 of their 16.

Their record sits at 2-2, with wins over the New York Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks. The losses have been to Orlando and Boston, two of the Eastern Conference's upper tier. And in those two losses, the opponents combined to hit 30 of 49 (61.2 percent) threes. The Celtics bench did most of the damage last night, draining 13 of 16 treys.

"They're veterans, our bench," said Boston coach Doc Rivers. "They know how to play off each other. They're extremely unselfish. You don't see that with a lot of benches. This group is trying to get each other off. They're playing to win. No agendas."

Except to win and to win big. Like last night.

Sixers are doomed to mediocrity at best and no one cares.

Sixers played with no passion. Under past 2 coaches, Sixers never quit. Last night they quit mid 1st quarter. They are not playing with consistent defensive energy. They are playing at the offensive end like a petulant child who is being told by their parent to do something they don't wish to do and that they don't believe in. Really bad. Team will be blown up at the trade deadline if they can move anyone. Start over.

I've loved the Sixers since '79 and really like the current core of AI, Young, Speights, and Lou. But I don't have much hope for them. Brand was useless last night. Sammy was typical Sammy (good def for a little bit, an offensive spark, then wildly inconsistent and frustrating to watch). I don't have the answer. I think they may have digressed. I wish they hadn't invested in Brand and instead could make a run for Bosh next year . . .

I concur with Leegles. Why can we never defend the three? Because we have weak perimeter defense that forces help defense and teams swing the ball to the open outside shooter. Stay on the shooter!! They teach you that in rec. leagues. Our bigs aren't good enough to rely on them to handle things down low so the guards help and "oh there's another pass flying over my head for another open three in which I can't get out to dfend." Splash, Sheed. Splash, House. Splash, Splash, Splash. If we weren't fans we wouldn't care. We do. Get it together. And Sam is like the guy that's a total nut but you wanna like him and as soon as you think he's cool, boom he brings you back to reality.

Same old Sixers... can't defend and can't shoot. The Celtics don't bring in their A or even B game to beat them...their C will do just fine. Until Dalembert's contract expires they are strapped at that position and when it does who are they gonna get (not that it matters too much because Sammie has one of the lowest basketball IQ's I've ever seen!)? For the first tiem in a long time I was impressed with Iggie last night. Not becasue of his play but because of his comments after when he was talking about how the Celtics, Lakers, Spurs, and the Cleveland's of the world and how they play defense every play and the entire court. That comments was aimed at his teammates and coaching staff and it was made in a way that didn't insult or directly blame any one individual. Someone needs to be the leader on this team that is sorely lacking one. Someone needs to get in other players faces and DEMAND better...

OK, so us Philly fans have been watching this Samuel Dalembert act for 6 years now. 95% of the fans in Philly (I don't think I'm exaggerating at all here) KNOW FOR A FACT that SAM DALEMBERT DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO PLAY BASKETBALL. However, 55 year old lifelong "basketball man" Eddie Jordan doesn't seem to understand this. It's absolutely infuriating. Anyone who doesn't see that Sam Dalembert does not know how to play basketball after 6 YEARS, 6 FREAKIN 6 YEARS is incompetant. Please, please, I beg you, stop putting Sam Dalembert out there to embarass himself and the city of Philadephia. He was done 4 years ago but "lifelong basketball man" Eddie Jordan is just too mind numbingly stupid to see this. We all can see it, why can't he? Absolutely pathetic.

Nothing but the truth
The Sixers offense was doing well initially but it's hard to account for your opponent being hot. It took Boston playing the game of their lives to stay ahead of the Sixers. They had one of the greatest shooting games in the history of the NBA. This is kind of what I was concerned about that teams would be so amped up to play the Sixers that they would have incredible nights. I highly doubt Boston will be able to play that way next time they meet.

Ed Stupanski must go. Elton Brand is now going to sink this team into the murky depths of obscurity with his large contract. Way to go Ed. Still working for the Nets I see.

Brand's line last night was embarassing and disgraceful for an all-star with a max contract...28 mins, 6 pts, 4 rebs. I expect growing pains with youngsters like Speights, Holliday, Young, Smith and Williams on the roster but Brand should be the stabilizing force. If he doesn't set the example for the youngsters, who will?

uhhhhm, nothing but the truth, why would teams be amped up to play the Sixers???? A great shooting game? Its because of our awful defense. When you let a team hit on 70% (Celtics) or 55% (Orlando) of their 3 point attempts, the outcome will be obvious. Not to mention the fact that we shot 6% from three land last night. Just awful..... Anyways, another embarassing loss.

Game of their lives? Seriously, I mean SERIOUSLY? That loss followed the same pattern as almost every loss for the last 3-4 years...can't defend (especially the 3) and can't shoot. Guess every loss is due to the opponent having the "game of their lives"... come on...

Folks: Nothing but the truth is being sarcastic as always where the Sixers are concerned (at least I hope so for his sake).
