For 76ers, it's back to basics

After yesterday's 76ers practice, assistant coaches Randy Ayers and Jim Lynam took a few minutes with the big men, going over the finer details of guarding the pick-and-roll.

Samuel Dalembert asked a few questions, Elton Brand nodded.

The Sixers are in need of sharpening such skills after Wednesday night's lopsided, season-opening loss to the Orlando Magic.

The Sixers now play the Milwaukee Bucks tonight in their home opener at the Wachovia Center. It will be the first game for the Bucks, who are led by speedy point guard Brandon Jennings, the team's first-round pick in the 2009 NBA draft.

The Sixers flew home from Orlando with widened eyes: They trailed by as many as 31 points, and allowed the Magic 70 points in the first half and 16 made three-pointers.

"That's been the history of our team," said point guard Lou Williams, whose 18 points on Wednesday made him the only Sixers starter in double figures. "They shoot threes, and we're attacking the basket and shooting twos. It's hard to play threes-and-twos, threes-and-twos - you're going to get blown out every night if a team shoots like that. . . . There are things we need to tweak on defense."

Added Williams: "We got our butts handed to us, which is an eye-opener for us."

The Sixers spent about 90 minutes on the court yesterday at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Coach Eddie Jordan said the team watched film beforehand, analyzing clips of eight or nine offensive plays where they executed well and got a good shot.

"We're not quite there, yet," Jordan said. "We knew it would be a process to get to a level where we're really clicking. When that happens, it's going to be a beautiful thing to be a part of, and I know that."

Jordan said showing clips of successful offensive sets showed his team that, when executing properly and dedicating themselves to the offense, open looks are created.

"We're taking baby steps, we're growing," Brand said. "We're still trying to find our way through the offense, execute."

Jordan said if he spent more time on offense during practice, the team would be further along, but he must also bring along the defense.

In recent years, the Sixers have struggled to defend the perimeter: They've struggled to effectively stop the pick-and-roll and, within possessions, that has ended in open three-pointers. Jordan said Wednesday night's onslaught by the Magic was different.

"I saw Vince Carter make two threes well beyond the three," Jordan said. "We're not going to guard that, anyway."

"It's disappointing," said Brand of Orlando's three-pointers. "It was discouraging."

Get used to it Sixers, you don't have defenders for the 3. Dally has slowed down from the kid we saw years ago, and brand can't jump.

Another thing...I suppose a guy standing 8 feet behind the perimeter should be guarded heavily, because you know, 40 foot three point shots are usually very high-percentage shots and therefore require man-to-man cover. It's not like guarding a SG man-to-man that far away is risky, you know, since there's very little chance of him just blowing right by you and driving to the hoop. Oppressed, you really know what you're talking about. Please keep giving your advice on these posts so maybe one day you could become the head coach and bring this city it's first championship in decades....

The loss to the Magic simply reinforces for me the complete lack of competitive balance in the NBA. The Magic, like the Celts, Lakers, Cavs, Spurs, and N.O., are teams the 76ers will be fortunate to beat at best one time each. The Sixers have good shots against the Knicks, Nets, Bucks, Heat, Clippers, Kings, Warriors, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Raptors on a nightly basis. They'll also win some against the mid-level teams when they play well and their opponents have off nights. I figure Elton Brand is good for maybe 30-40 games before he goes down; then we can focus on the younger players on the club and hope that Eddie Jordan has the skills to develop them into good NBA players. If they come through, this team will come close to breaking even and may make the playoffs as a 6, 7, or 8 seed. If Jordan fails at that task, look for 20-30 wins and a new head coach, possibly in midseason.

Well if you really look at it if we weren't playing a zone defense guys wouldn't be wide open for shots in a half court set. If the million dollar babies could gaurd their own man whe would have no need to double down. My point is did any one have an off night for Orlando? I don't think so, If the Sixers want to be great offensively they have the kids to run the opposite team in the ground because that's how they are built so why is Jordan changing the only thng that works for this team? If the Sixers want to be great on defensive they have a long way to go, they have the players that can be great on D but not the heart and commitment to aggressively attack and shut down the opponets.

They are never going to win without running and gunning.

I feel sorry for reporters covering the Sixers, it is always the same old story. It took years to collect cap space and it was spent without bringing the team a top 5 player. So now its back to waiting more years to have cap space again or somehow end up with a top 3 draft pick. Without a superstar we are just spinning our wheels.

Chinese papers are reporting Yao Ming has made mention of Philadephia next year.

We have seen all of the experimenting for too long now. Lou Williams is not and never will be a point guard. Andre "Iggy" will never be a shooting guard. He can help the team more at small forward, eve if you have to trade Thad. Sam Dalembert is not a starting center, demote him as he is only situational at best. Elton Brand will never be Elton Brand again and even if he was, he doesn't fit. Josh Smith would have fit better with a team of young runners. Another year is lost and that is not a good thing because it is the fans who deserve better but instead will suffer.

Oooooooh. That loss hurt bigtime. Let the season playout I guess. And hope for improvement.
