How come NBA teams seem to practice many fewer days before the season than baseball and football teams? Do they have play books to study?

My questions about Swift's injury and how the coaching staff responded went unanswered. He's a quality veteran that would greatly help the sixers off the bench if given a chance. Is the coaching staff going to give up on him because of that injury or are they going to be more patient??
