McRae, Tokoto will be at 76ers camp, sources say

The 76ers apparently are not ready to part ways with Jordan McRae and J.P. Tokoto. A league source confirmed that McRae will join the Sixers for training camp, which begins Sept. 29 at Stockton University in Galloway Township, N.J. Another league source said Tokoto will participate in camp as well.

But would that be the case if the two second-round picks hadn't pushed to attend the camp? Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie could not be reached for comment.

Second-rounders can show up to training camp and force the franchise that picked them to make a decision: Tender an offer or lose their draft rights and see them become unrestricted free agents.

The Sixers have until Sept. 5 to tender an offer Tokoto, the 58th pick in the draft. They have until Sept. 10 to do the same with McRae, whom the Sixers acquired in a second-round trade in the 2014 draft. The Sixers can tender offers as early as two weeks before the deadlines.

From that point, Tokoto and McRae can begin negotiating contracts with the Sixers. Don't be shocked if they decide to gamble on themselves the way former Sixer K.J. McDaniels did last season.

McDaniels, who was drafted 32d overall last summer, signed a one-year, non-guaranteed minimum deal during the first day of training camp. The move enabled McDaniels to become a restricted free agent after the season.

The Sixers traded McDaniels to Houston in February and the Rockets resigned him to a three-year deal worth $10 million last month.

Last summer, the San Antonio Spurs selected McRae 58th overall before trading him to the Sixers. The former Tennessee standout agreed to head overseas instead of going to training camp. The Sixers assigned him to Melbourne United of the Australian National Basketball League. After that season, he played for the Delaware 87ers, the Sixers' NBA Development League affiliate.

McRae averaged 19.9 points in 27 games in Australia before averaging 18.4 points for the 87ers. Last month, the 6-foot-6, 185-pounder played on the Sixers' summer-league teams.

Tokoto, a 6-6, 200-pounder out of North Carolina, also played in the two summer leagues.
